WV&K War Emergency Hopper

As the Second World War began, traffic began to pick up astronomically, and at the same time car builders got busier and steel became scarce. The WV&K NG did what NG lines are best at…they improvised. Having a major lumber mill online supplied the bulk of the raw materials, and having their own expert shop forces, they designed and built a class of all wood cars “For The Duration”… These cars are based on the N&W’s Class HS hopper which really was an all wood car built during WWI to conserve steel. I NEED more rolling stock online, and since my styrene order hasn’t shown up yet, I decided to take a page out of “The Bruce’s” book and build from what I got on hand, that is to say WOOD!

This car is going to represent a fully modern Wooden car complete with knuckle couplers and air brakes, but is intended to be an operating model. That is to say not a lot of delicate fiddly details to apply and keep reapplying everytime it gets used. Materials are 1 x12 shelving board and some 1/4 luan ply wood left over from some shelving projects. Detail masters are gonna be made from styrene scrap, and cast in resin natcherlly. Each car is 16" long and I believe I have enough material for a run of 4 cars, which would spot my hopper fleet at 10, respectable I think. The cars are gonna ride on my own cast resin trucks as well.

I guess there are some advantages to getting “laid off”…

Looking good, Bart!

Would it need some rods across it to keep the sides from bowing out and breaking under load?

Yep....then again...most open top cars do.......

Great idea Bart. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

Progress made in details. One could easily go NUTS detailing these things, I finally had to make myself stop and say “good Enough”

What more could you do to it, with the exception of inside braces?

Did I say that out loud?

It looks great! Make me a couple, PLEASE!

Looking real good so far. The details really make a big difference.

What kind of resin do you use for casting the trucks? Do they hold up well?

That is sooooo cool!

Yep finally one painted…the carshop gang finally showed up for work one day and knocked out the last three .

I use the Micro Mark (which is really Smooth On) CR-300 for most casting purposes…I did some tests with Alumilite which was a bit harder to come by and the CR-300 and found not really much of a difference as far as what I needed. I put a brass journal bearing in before fitting the wheelsets, and just a touch of lubricant. Note that these are ‘cast steel’ trucks and are very thick castings in all dimensions, the same thing tried with arch bars prolly wouldn’t be near as successful due to the relatively thin dimensions of the weight bearing members. After a brief celebration, management put the shop back to work constructing the first of our new boxcar fleet…Film at 11…

Neat. Now some hand-drawn numbers and reporting marks, and you’re all set.

I like them. But I would prefer regular lettering… And a nice logo!

Those turned out well.

Later,

K

Great job Bart
