WV&K Steel Cabin

So it all started while discussing how to build steel NG passenger cars one night in chat. Several techniques and combinations were thrown around, so before I fully committed the resources to a pair of 45’ cars in 1:20 scale, I decided on a test run…I needed a second cabin anywasys as the one on the line is obviously the Bachmann EBT cabin, and everyone has one of those.

I started by drawing out the sides in CAD, printing them out on cardstock then using that as a template to commit them to wood. The wood is 1/4" luan left over from a home improvement project…

I also assembled the caboose trucks from Bachmann wheelsets and my own castings. These differ from my freight car trucks only in that they have leaf springs instead of coal ones in the side details…

Don’t forget to make one for me

Nice work so far.

If it’s a steel cabin, why is it made of wood?..

Cause he’s dying to try my idea Ken! The steel is the cardstock…figure that one out!

Isn’t cardstock for birthdays and anniveraries???

Naah…Dad, it was a big party in New York back in the 60’s

I know that you are using left over material, but if you were looking for a great material that has an actual metal finish, but cuts like wood; look into Lusterboard. It is a very thin pre-painted aluminum sheet laminated on plywood. Probably the thinnest available would be 12mm (about 1/2").

I tried to talk my BIL into this material for a teardrop camper he is building. He went with MDO which is a smooth paintable paper finish on plywood.

Ends of the car in place…and the cupola assembled…I think the proportions are pretty good…mine you there will be another 1.5" of platform on both ends…

Where do you find Lusterboard?

Ok its cold and damp in The Big Sandy Valley, and I’m fighting a cold so I really didn;t feel like working outside…so I got a little done on the cabin. The roofline over the carbody is shaped from blocks of wood. Today I fabricated and applied the ‘awnings’ for lack of a better term over the platforms…

This gives me a better sense of the proportions of the car and I’m quite happy with it…

Detailing should begin soon…

Looking good so far…

Looks good Bart, must be a little on the heavy side.

coming along nicely, Bart…

Nice looking body there Bart. The proportions are starting to balance out nicely.

the skin is starting to come together…I laid out the rivet poatterns in CAD and then printed it out on heavy photo paper. The rivets were then embossed with a press and individual panels secured with CA…
