Should be ready in a couple of weeks?? How is the layout coming along?? You have several challenge buildings to place on it ready to go!

I wish, Pete. Been piddling with it for almost 2 years now. But I do have a deadline so it will get finished before the end of May 2018. Otherwise, it will probably become my new home(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif).

Layout, layout … what layout? Am I supposed to be building a layout too???

Well Devon… Maybe.

OUCH (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)That really hurt… but the truth hurts sometimes (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-sealed.gif)I did learn from Devon’s layout building experience, though. Don’t draw a line in the sand!

Yeah Dan, putting a rope around your neck while sitting on a skittish horse is better than giving this gang of … friends? Ammo to shoot at you constantly

Devon did more then draw a line in the sand. He almost cast it in cement. Then he went off and spent time in other pursuits. But then Poor Devon was struck down. I wouldn’t wish his health issues on my worst enemy.

Ok, progress update on the WFO. I got all the inner arch brick cut. That was a challenge in itself. I have a 10" wet tile/brick saw but the arch brick need to be cut down the 4.5" side and the 10" saw can’t do that in one pass. I could make a pass and then flip the brick 180 degrees but that never leaves a smooth cut. So, got me a 12" diamond blade for my miter saw, rigged me up a water nozzle that sprayed water on the blade and went to work.

Now, before I go and get scolded for using water on a saw that is strictly intended to cut dry, I took proper safety precautions including making sure no water was getting to the motor and the saw is plugged into a GFCI outlet. Also, I cleaned and lubricated everything once I was done. After the arch bricks were cut, I dry fit them to make sure they were cut correctly.

The wedges are just there temporarily to take the place of the mortar. Next up was cutting the first course of bricks for the dome and mortaring them in place.

That’s where we ended this weekend. Next up is cleaning the floor tiles and putting down some cardboard to protect it during the remaining construction of the dome. Oh, almost forgot, I did add some lighting so I could work in the evenings.

Thanks for following along.

Putting in a delivery order for some pizza ! Looks good Dan and didn’t think you would try Wet sawing with a dry saw without necessary precautions.

Pete you missed your chance…

Is it done yet ?

Sean, what’s done is done, but no the oven is not complete (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Good

I’m enjoying the right up!

Well, I’m closer to cooking pizzas than I was at the last installment but still a looooooong way to go. I now have 4 courses of brick laid and the 5th is started. There will be about 12 total courses.

I still need to tie the 3rd and 4th courses into the inner arch to really call them complete.

Here a re a couple shots of the outside of the oven.

Once the oven is built, I will enclose it in a doghouse to keep it out of the weather. The oven dome will be covered with ceramic fiber insulation blankets and then the doghouse will be filled with several cubic feet of vermiculite to increase the thermal efficiency of the oven. So, what you see in the above two photos will not be seen once the oven is complete, hence the wasting of leftover mortar on the exterior of the dome. Thanks for following along on our journey. I know its not train related but I am enjoying sharing the progress with you all.

We must be pulling double shifts what with the tent and lights and all. …(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Okay, but the real question is, are you going to share pizza with us all?

Ken, the tent is to keep the oven dry during construction … well, primarily to keep the calsil board (insulation) under the oven dry. That stuff absorbs water like a sponge and is difficult to get dry. The lights are as you expected … so I don’t have an excuse to quit just because it gets dark (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Absolutely, Forrest. I’ll be glad to throw a pizza party for LSC and feed whoever shows up (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif).

Nice progress Dan!! Keep the work in the dark coming and it will be ready soon

I’m beginning to smell pizzas. Although I didn’t have a whole lot of time this past weekend to work on the oven between cows and weather, I did manage to make a little progress. Finished the 3rd and 4th courses of brick by tying them into the arch, completed course 5 and the arch. Got a visit from Waverly Southern RR’s owner, B.C. Paws. He wanted to know why his RR crew was working on an oven instead of his RR. Really didn’t have an answer.

Arch Progress

5th course complete.

Arch complete. It didn’t even fall when I took out the form.

I’ve got a little touch up work to do on the interior of the arch, but that was expected. Getting closer. Thanks for following our journey.

Woo Hoo!!! Looking good and May is right around the corner! I think you are sandbagging on the pictures and will “ suddenly” be finished and be pulling pizza out for a crowd of kids. Oh Incase you have not thought of it , a crowd of kids wanting pizza , you better visit your local Costco for a 100lb sack of flour and empty the cheese and meat sections to feed them! Good luck and since Sean hasn’t said it yet

IS IT DONE YET???

Who me …(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)

Pete, I only wish it was done. Long way to go. Had to go to NC to a nieces wedding last weekend so went a couple weeks with no progress. This past weekend work resumed. Reached a significant milestone in WFO construction. Got the dome above the inner arch. It takes a lot of time cutting the oddly shaped bricks to transition from a hemispherical dome to a vertical, elliptical arch. Each course should go much faster now. Hopefully only five courses left to close the dome then it will be on to the vent which will involve 3 integrated elliptical arches and a chimney on top. Progress photos below.

6th Course, first to clear the arch.

7th course

Thanks for following along.
