WSRR Tie & Rail Car

Next car to join the Brown Dog Timber & Lumber Company roster is a tie and rail car. This is the 3rd installment in our work train series. The first two were the work caboose (Build Log) and a flatcar (Build Log). This build started with the construction of a flatcar more or less identical to the one we just completed. The tie deck was then added. The photos below show the tie deck temporarily mounted just to get a feel of the overall look. I still need to add 2 more posts on the far side and the ends to the tie deck. Once that is done, I’ll remove the deck and everything will get a coat of paint and weathering. Then we will add the underside details and trucks.

Thanks for following along.

looking good Dan!! did you print the end beams the couplers attatch to??

Thanks, Pete, and yes, the end beams were 3D printed along with the trucks, bolsters, stake pockets and queen posts.

Very nice, looks great

What they said…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Looks great Dan. Is this all in 1:20.3? I thought that is what you had said. Your printing skills are coming along nicely

Thanks, Devon. Yes it is in 1:20.3 or thereabout.

Time for an update on the tie and rail car. Except for some NBW’s, lettering and a little more weathering, its done. The car is sitting on 3D printed Andrews trucks. I did make one little mist … uhhh … ummm… change from the photos above. I had intended to mount the tie deck a little off center as shown previously but for some reason I mounted it even with one end of the car and didn’t realize that was wrong until the glue had set. Oh well, it is what it is now.

Thanks for following along.

Nice addition to the fleet Dan.

What Mike said… Great modeling work… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Dan

Very nicely planned, and extremely nice weathering. The 3D printed couplers have turned out very nicely.

Were the axel holes just drilled into the trucks, or do you have incerts or bushings for the axels to turn into?

Dennis

Dennis, the axle holes are part of the print. Currently, I’m just inserting the axle directly into the plastic and they roll extremely well. We’ll see how they hold up over time. I’ve printed some that accept a 3mm flanged bearing but it just seems to be overkill. I may be proven wrong on that one day (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)I’ll try to remember to take a photo of the back of the side frame tonight and post so you can see how it all goes together.

Thanks Dan

Are you printing in PLA or another product.

Dennis

3D Fuels’ Pro PLA

Dennis, here is a pic of the truck before assembly. As you can see, the axles just slip into the hole created during the printing process.

There is no detail on the back (inside) of the side frame in order to facilitate ease of printing and no one will ever see it once it is in service.

Eh its alright for an Alabama guy. Looks great my friend. I like that truck looks like it came out nice.
