World's longest train tunnel

I guess this is old news, as construction began in 1993. But it’s new to me.

24 years to build one tunnel! Amazing feat!

It’s great to have an update,

We live about 10 miles from the San Andreas Fault and just the thought of a 35 mile tunnel gives me shivers!

There is a special website where you can follow the progress, the setbacks and the effort involved. http://www.alptransit.ch/en/?no_cache=1 (English version)

If the first tunnel on the Gotthard was a brute - built in the late 1800s - this one has a few more challenges.

PS as with most things in life there is a downside on this one: not much glorious Swiss scenery inside that tunnel and no spiral tunnels to admire either.

Now THAT would be something, if Disney designed the tunnel like Space Mountain.
