World's Longest Model Train attempt 10-9 thru 10-13-08

Rick Cartwright (a.k.a. Rick the Railroad Guy) is attempting to set the world’s record for model train length

this weekend in the Phoenix, AZ area. (10-9 thru 10-13-08)

For more details please visit his website:

Rick says thanks to everyone that has helped in any way.

His website has live video streaming available.

Rick is the first person to attempt this on gauge 1 (large scale) track in 1:29 scale.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Good for him! It’s a fun ide and he’s having fun

I wonder if he’ll do it differently this time? Last time he had–it seemed to me–way too many locos and operators. And also, at the risk of igniting a war, it seemed to me that trying to do it on battery power was a mistake. Too many operators, too many battery packs to keep charged, too many variables. I’d have run jumpers on either side of the track and just used conventional DC. One operator

But it’s easy to criticize from the sidelines–good luck to him

It’s a really difficult problem. Although I would tend to agree with Steve, it would still be really difficult to have every engine working at 100% reliability, with almost exactly the same voltage / speed response over the desired speed range.

Having a level track with no curves would really help, but any minor contact failure could still put something on the ground.

Doing it with R/C+individual operators is probably the most difficult way. Doing it on a RR with significant curves probably doubles the obstacles to success!

Results will be interesting.

Happy (High Reliability) RRing,

Jerry

Hope it works out will be interesting to see what power will be used and where locos are place. Anyway have fun. Later RJD

Looks to me like DCC with high amp boosters is the way to go, but every body has an opinion…
Best of LUCK to ya…

He’s trying it right now–or rather, if you watch the live feed you can see a train not moving on a trestle, and every now nd then someone walks by or fiddles with the train

The flapping blue tarp is annoying…

Perhaps we should chip in and buy a new tarp? That one looks more than a little aged…

he spent all his dosh on intermodal stacks!

Everytime I look I see a different picture of nothing happening. But the flapping tarp is gone

I sent him a text message, and 5 minutes later he moved the camera! Behold the power of LSC

did he do it?
I have checked his website and can’t find out what happend if it was good or bad?
If you know please let me know.

Thanks
Geoff

He BBQ alot…and had a lot of trains sitting round…and a few fellas walking around…

I think it has been rescheduled for the second weekend in November. If he can get enough operators, the post said.

One operator, DCS or DCC with all locos in a consist would work much easier… but we have had that discussion already…

Regards, Greg

Greg, what’s DCS? I haven’t heard of that one before.

DCS is MTH’s proprietary control system
