Wooden Cab for Bachmann Ten Wheeler

Hey Everyone,

I’m in need of finding out what manufacturer makes a wooden cab for the Bachmann 10 wheeler. I have a 10th Anniversary unit that I need to change the cab on.

Thanks, Chuck

Chuck,

You run a cabinet shop. Make it yourself! This shouldn’t be too hard a task for you.

Banta has what you are looking for -

Before you do that Chuck, I’m assuming it will be converted.
You know why, I don’t need to bash anymore Bachmann.
You do want it to run good, dontcha?

Interesting that the site lists the 1/20 cab kit for the Indy, I thought that was long gone from the lineup. I have one of those just need to build it up onm my Indy.

I wish Vance Bass still made cabs, Id like to get one of his Mason Bogie cabs

Bob,
I believe that many share your thoughts on the Mason cab.

Chuck, you may be just as easily served by laminating the existing cab with wood. I did that on my 2-8-0 with good results.

K

Vance’s Mason kits are alive and well, now available through Bronson Tate Architectural models:

John, if it runs nearly as good as my Anniversary 10-Wheeler he'll be fine!-she ran for 4+ hours on Saturday after getting my loop back together-only prob was my trackage :-).

Chuck, I have a Banta that I am almost finished building…now to determine how to “finish” the roof…I stained my cab almost a dark walnut, it looks really nice!

I chose the Banta for the extra height…In hopes of one day actually owning some Bmann Fn3 Locos…I now do, and think they will look nice together-if I ever get it finished!

Cale, I’m fond of using .005" brass, embossed from underneath to simulate a tin roof.

I blackened the brass, but you can paint it just as easily. Mine’s washed with a dilute black paint to simulate soot, though not piled on so heavy as if it’s not been cleaned in a while. The completed wood cab (which–as mentioned above–was done simply by laminating wood on the outside of the stock Bachmann cab.

I did make a new roof, cutting off around 1/4" from the very top edge of the stock cab. Later, K

So you emboss from the bottom , then darken, curve, glue and clamp…now this I gotta try! would my local Hobby Lobby have the brass sheet?

thx
cale

Kevin, you are the master…
Good stuff!

That's pretty much it, except I typically use spray adhesive (3M's 45 or 77--either works well) so there's no clamping needed. Contact cement works just as nicely. You've got to be a bit careful when laying it down, as once it's down, it's down. With the scribed lines, though, it's easy to keep things even. Because it's very thin brass, there's no pre-bending needed, it will lay down when applied to the existing roof of the cab. I then just bend the edges around the edge of the cab and trim on the underside with an X-acto knife. Running a flat-head screwdriver over the bottom edge is usually enough to form it and hold it against the underside.

Hobby Lobby might have it, or you can order it on-line directly from K&S or your favorite on-line shop.

K

Thanks guys,

I’ve gone to the links, but neither site has what I’m looking for.

Kevin, your cab looks great it has given me some great idea’s.

Hey John, this Bachmann will run forever thanks to Barry’s Big Trains, see ya at the next battery “Mafia” run day.
