Does anyone have any ideas about a wood rack for the modeling shop?
I’m starting to pile up everything from 1/8 x 1/2 to 1/2 x 3/4 in mostly 36" lengths.
Some is 24" and some less.
My drop I keep sized up in small bins.
What do you have in your shop?

Go get some 2" PVC pipe and cut it in 3’ lengths. Then stack them and glue them together. You not only have the 2" round openings in which to hold stuff, but the smaller triangular openings are great for smaller stock like brass and steel rods, styrene, etc. You can use smaller diameter PVC as well, but fitting more than a few 1/2" x 3/4" pieces in the smaller tubes will be difficult. I built something similar from some old plastic tubes, and it’s worked very well. You can see it off to the left of this photo (the grey tubes on top of the wood and masonite rack I made for sheet stock.

No, my workshop is not usually that neat. Later, K
I just built one in the garage because I got tired of piling and un-piling boards to get at what I want. This is mostly for large stuff 2x4’s, 2x6, 5/4 and 1" boards etc.
I used 2x4’s for uprights spaced about every 30 inches. As wood stock supports I used 1x2 furring strips on each side of the 2x4’s. I also used furring strips to complete a box frame around the uprights. I think I made about 4 rows of supports.
The smallest piece I can store on the rack is about 28 inches. I store boards on edge. I tried to find out if it was better to store on edge or to make piles again. I couldn’t find any information so I decided that on edge gave me easier access to everything.
On the front I made some supports for plywood, but the 4x8s I put there a month ago are not doing too well and starting to warp.
BTW, the floor in my garage gets wet when there is a big rain, so I used 10" galvanized hex bolts as feet to keep the rack supported well of the wet floor.
I’d take a picture but with the plywood on the front and all the crap around it you wouldn’t be able to see much.
EDIT: Kevin and I were composing at the same time. I just saw his picture. I think I’ll add a few PVC tubes slung under my furring strips for small stock.
