I am finishing up my Forney project and decided to go with the wood cab version of the C-16. I have been looking at pics of wood cab prototypes but most are in B&W. Were wood cabs typically painted on the exterior or just varnished?

Yeah they got painted…
So when was the major change from wood to steel? I know to the end of steam there were some very old engines that had been upgraded through their time in service, but there had to be a time when metal took over for strength, safety, plus ease of maintenance.
