With Apologies to Paul Harvey

Today in our local newspaper, there was an article by our Veteran’s Advisor from the local VA Medical Center.

[Soap Box On]In talking about Black History Month, he mentions that not only Black History, but “America is losing its sense of history. This decline in studying the history of America also diminishes the study of African American history, and the accomplishments and sacrifices of those of African American descent.” [Soap Box Off]

How many remember Elijah McCoy, the inventor of a device to oil the engines of locomotives automatically? His invention was copied and sold more cheaply, but many engineers refused to use these copies and…

(wait for it)…

wanted “The Real McCoy”.

And now you know the rest of the story.

Don’t want to talk politics and get the gang here going but I agree Lou. America is losing its sense of history. History is hardly taught in schools anymore and most kids know more about Kim Kardashians favorite lip gloss colour than say WW2. Even sadder is that our history both good and bad is being white washed over to make it soft and politically correct.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Not good for the countries future.

and now back to the regularly scheduled happy train talk.

Corner Lou!

(and not mine either) were running out of corners here

Thomas Crapper also had a better idea…

TECHNICALLY The word Crap shouldnt be considered a naughty word, it comes from Thomas Crappers improved water tank toilet, saying “I’m going to the Crapper”, meant they were going to use the invention of Mr Thomas Crapper. The Crapper siphon water tank toilet is what we still use today, only now its porcelain not cast iron and the tank sits on the rear of the seat, the added height of the tank being negated due to better drainage design and the need for better repair access. Thank you Mr Crapper

:stuck_out_tongue:

It is not only America that has diminished its history: the same applied to the UK.

Frequently when politicians and re-inventors of the wheel make comments they seem quite oblivious to history.

My grandparents had a Crapper in their upstairs bathroom. It was installed when the house was built in 1905, and Grandfather saw no reason to replace it. As far as I know, it is still there.

Another interesting factoid… the Seattle Post Intelligencer, of Seattle, WA, was the the first newspaper to publish tide tables. It was necessary because a lot of the early homes were built at so low an elevation that when the tide flowed, the sewer would back up, and if you flushed your Crapper, the sewer could backwash. The take home lesson is, only flush on the ebb, or at low tide. I only tell the truth, here. You can look it up.

Entertaining, but false. See also Elija McCoy
