Winter Storm watches

After having an usually warm Nov and first week of Dec, it looks like the Kittatinny Mt RR will be back in winter mod. Winter Storm Watches are up for 3-8 inches wed night thursday morning with the higher amounts in the higher elevations. Looks like the guys might be caught off guard with this one. They still have to rebuild the plow and one day is not going to be enough time. If the line gets too bad the guys might have to borrow a plow from somewhere or hope its not too deep and the engines can run through it. The Candlewood Valley RR better keep there eyes out could hit them.

…WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY EVENING THROUGH
THURSDAY MORNING…

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOUNT HOLLY HAS ISSUED A WINTER
STORM WATCH…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM WEDNESDAY EVENING THROUGH
THURSDAY MORNING.

  • LOCATIONS…CARBON AND MONROE COUNTIES IN THE SOUTHERN POCONOS
AND SUSSEX COUNTY IN NEW JERSEY.

  • HAZARD TYPES…HEAVY SNOW EXPECTED.

  • ACCUMULATIONS…3 TO 8 INCHES WITH THE GREATEST ACCUMULATIONS IN
    THE HIGHER TERRAIN.

  • TIMING…THE RAIN SHOULD START CHANGING TO SNOW OVER THE HIGHER
TERRAIN IN THE POCONOS DURING WEDNESDAY EVENING AND CHANGE OVER
IN ALL AREAS BY VERY EARLY THURSDAY MORNING. THE SNOW SHOULD END
AROUND THE START OF THE MORNING COMMUTE ON THURSDAY.

  • IMPACTS…THE GREATEST COMMUTING IMPACT SHOULD OCCUR THURSDAY
MORNING. BUT ANYONE DRIVING WEDNESDAY EVENING AND NIGHT COULD
FACE DIFFICULT TRAVEL. SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES PER HOUR
ARE POSSIBLE DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE STORM.

  • WINDS…NORTHWEST 10 TO 15 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 20 MPH. THE SNOW
IS EXPECTED TO BE ON THE WETTER SIDE, SO BLOWING AND DRIFTING
    SHOULD BE LESS THAN AVERAGE.

  • TEMPERATURES…WILL FALL THROUGH THE 30S AND BY THURSDAY MORNING
WILL BE IN THE UPPER 20S AND LOWER 30S.

  • VISIBILITIES…ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS AT TIMES. THIS WILL MAKE
FOR DIFFICULT TRAVEL ESPECIALLY ON HIGHER TERRAIN ROADWAYS.

We are prepared! The track crew was out over the weekend and the plow train was as well making sure the plow didn’t have any clearance issues with the new track alignment. We are looking at only 1-3 inches. The plow train is staged on an indoor siding ready to run. Depending on timing it may melt before we can get to it.

What I need to do is build a snow shed over my new bridge so I can store the locomotives and plow outside to get cold. I have enough sign scrap I should be able to throw something together, but not in time for this one.

thought that was why you built the tunnel at Natural Bridge, to set out the plow train

There is a slight chance we may get some rain/snow starting Sunday…who knows. Post your plow videos.

Nope. It's not long enough and there is no easy access to be able to switch the batteries off.

Guess you’ll have to build a train barn with lights like I did. Now all I need is the plow! And see if we get snow this winter.

My indoor layout connects to the outdoor layout which is very convenient. It's just that you don't want to run a plow warm because it just makes ice. I usually shovel and dry the first 5 or 6 feet outside the window then move the train outside and park it for an hour to cool. Last winter as the sun-melt dripped over the tracks I decided a temporary snow shed for this area would be a good idea.

It’s 36 degrees here, with frost. Which wouldn’t be a big deal except our furnace blew up last week. (No damage to the house, thank God!) We’re finally getting a new one put in today.

Jon;

Think I read somewhere that one should spray PAM on the plow blade to keep snow from sticking to it - even when the blade is cold. Have you had any experience with that?

Thanks,
David Meashey

I don’t have a rotary, just an Aristo wedge plow. I’ve never used PAM spray, but I have used spray silicone on the plow blade. It helps a little. When you have this much snow, the only thing that helps is if it is powder…

Plows don’t like ice in the flangeways…

Got it, Jon.

I think I need a Rotary. Doug - our WX guys now say rain maybe on Tues.

We ended up with about a 1/2 inch of slushy snow on all surfaces but pavement. Wont have to do any plowing since the the balasted areas snow did not stick.

Barely enough to notice here. A few spots on the car - mostly frozen slush. Weather service FAIL

No snow for us either Thankfully.

I think John should get a rotary plow for Christmas (or earlier)!
