Winter projects

The cooler weather is upon us and that means, for some, train running outdoors is coming to an end, unless your crazy like me and enjoy running in the cold and snow. Its also that time of year to start thinking about working on projects for the winter. What kind of projects does everyone have for the winter?

Some projects for me are:

  • convert an LGB Porter into a gypsy.
  • replace all rolling stock with scratch built ones (flatcars, boxcars, gondolas, logging caboose)
  • add a second loop to my live steam track
  • rebuild live steam track legs.
  • attemp to make more figures

Im sure more will come up.

Winter projects

  • take the trains to the local library for a weekend in December
  • continue with the EBT shop project
  • AMS Coach to Baggage conversion.
  • Outside braced caboose.
  • Composite Boxcar

All 1:20.3

Finish up last winter’s “To-Do” list, first on that being to finish up the previous winter’s…

Seriously, I’ll probably finally get around to finishing my EBT #7 project, though I’d ideally like to finish that this fall so I can paint it before the cold weather sets in. I’ve got myriad unfinished freight and passenger car projects still sitting on my shelf, and a new depot to build for Neelyton. I’m also looking to rehab some buildings (another “last winter” project). This actually has a chance of happening this year just based on me beginning to re-furbish my other buildings and the momentum is swinging my way at the moment. Then there’s the Climax project, and whatever else strikes my fancy which will invariably “cut in line” because I’d rather work on it than the other projects…

Later,

Get a trestle built from my shop to the layout, so I don’t have to keep carrying rolling stock when I want to run.
I also need a lift out bridge in this trestle. So I’ve got to do some engineering.

Finish up the mining complex I started 2 winters ago.
Build a few more structures.

How can you guys be talking about winter already??? I know it is coming but don’t remind me. I also run year round but maybe only once a week in the winter vs 3-5 times in summer. I’m actually looking forward to getting some snow so I can give the rotary I built last year a good workout. We only got a few inches of slushy mess here on the Cape last year.
Projects.
Build Structures.
Design and build a bridge or 2 to replace the bricks propping up the track.
Design and build 3 approx 30" long passenger cars to replicate the local Cape Cod Central tourist line.

Yea, it still being summer after all, I’m not even thinking of indoor projects yet.

My larger indoor layout will be on hiatus this winter due to ongoing storage issues, so after boxing and storing the larger stuff for that layout I will be focusing on stuff for the pizza.

Not in any particular order:

  1. Build a two track fiddle yard insert for the pizza so extra rolling stock can be taken to shows.
  2. Build a new town scene scenic insert for the pizza at the rear of the layout.
  3. Finally get the trestle section addition worked out on the pizza (priority)

Once the Lil Bug Mauler line comes out:

  1. Build a mini-goose out of the combine car (hoping some dealers break up sets and sell the stuff ala-cart)
  2. Adding piston rods to the Lil’ Bug Mauler engines.

Other projects:

  1. Finish my Bobber based Boxcab
  2. Attempt a small two cylinder Shay sized for the pizza
  3. Build a track powered pusher car for my Stomper based cars, as they only have a battery life of about 1-1/2 hours max.

A few small projects I’m sure will also crop up.

Bob, You need to remember Shawn is on top of the mountain, he is getting snow already!

I’ll wait till winter gets here…then I worry about it…

I am perhaps a bit “off” in that I build R/C model planes/trains year-round.

Lol in another month we could see some flakes flying. Tonights temps might go into the upper 30’s.

For indoors: A string of fifteen four-wheel ore cars. Quite a lot of painting, weathering, and relettering of cars and locos. Maybe finish the three water tanks I started last spring…

Right now I’m still concentrating on building my main freight yard, enjoying this beautiful weather and hoping winter stays at bay for three more months.

And, yes, I’ll operate in a blizzard if I feel like it!

My muse hasn’t been co-operative for months. I gotta lotta “oughtas”, but nothing much inspiring.

Yep ...one should be arriving soon. ;)

I refuse to give in that summer is over until the leaves are all down. I have a bunch of projects, in no particular order…

Finish the skeleton log cars started over a year ago.
Re-build & R/C the 2-Truck Shay I tore apart last winter.
Add trail-car power options to a few steam engines so big steam can return to the CVSRy next spring.
Americanize a few of the Pola buildings I’ve had in storage for 2 years
Find my work benches
Find the basement
Find the garage

Mik: Relax and enjoy something entirely different for awhile. Join a choir, or take up a simple musical instrument for a couple of months… Works for me, keeps me happy when R.R.'ing pales… Don’t worry, R.R. inspiration will return, probably stronger than ever… Meanwhile take all those oughtas and toss them in the can.

A few years ago I invented a new slogan for myself: “Just because you can, don’t mean you hafta.’” I still struggle to live by it, BTW… :o

My wife told me just because I can’t find any of the existing workbenches, does not mean I need to build/buy another one for whatever new project I’ve dreamed up.
