Large Scale Central

Winter projects

I was looking in the shop the other day and was looking at some of my bridges… why not make them out of Aluminum… I had some 1/2 sq stock laying on the rack and some spare time. So this is maybe the start of something new… I need to finsh it but thinking about what to do for the side bracing and on top. My other projects are a transfer table all out of Aluminum and a 48 and 60 inch long engine house 4 bay wide. and a 13 foot bridge with a 4 foot lift setcion. Should be a fun winter. I will post update thur out the process for you on the builds. Enjoy

Nice looking bridge. Be interesting to see your other planned projects.

Micro-Mark sells metal strips in brass and I believe some in aluminum also that might work for the bracing. Sure save a lot of cutting.

aluminum strips can be found at the big box hardware stores also. In lengths up to 8 feet.

Ok had some time not much to work out side on my layout. Did a little road work. Now got to finish the mountain when I get time.

Daniel,
I have long espoused the attraction of aluminium extrusions for our hobby. I wish that I had your welding skills. I have to rely on brackets and rivets for construction. l have grown very tired of maintaining my commercially manufacturered Chinese made truss bridges and may replace with an aluminium structure. While I meticulously maintained the wooden structures outdoors, it seems Chinese timber is not as rugged as those sourced elsewhere. The entire deck has rotted and is now supported just by the track screwed to it.

Daniel, Nice work ! But is that anyway too treat an interior caged Ford product?

Must have been a long midlife. I think I remember seeing three Mustangs :) Ralph

I did have 5 at once…

Daniel:
How are you welding that, mig, tig?

Some bridges mig other tig, Tig cost more but lot less clean up and jsut about as fast as the other. the one in the pic of that LONG bridge was Mig welded. When I build tressle bridges out of steel I Tig those cause I can make the weld very small but yet stong enogh to hold me standing on it.

OK the BIG 16 foot bridge got out of the shop and went to South Carolina this weekend… Here some pics. Next project is a 13 foot bridge with a 4 foot left section in it double track. Goint to be fun 83" tall when finished.
