Large Scale Central

WI&M Construction Log

I’m building a layout very loosely based on the Washington, Idaho and Montana Ry Co that ran from Palouse, Washington to Bovill, Idaho. Built to haul logs out of the forest for Potlatch Lumber Company now Potlatch Corporation, it still exists today as the Washington and Idaho Railway, Inc., having passed through the MILW and BN. The original WI&M never made it to Montana, but that didn’t stop them from thinking big. Let’s take a tour. The first photo represents the yard at Palouse, called Lairds. Note the chief engineer.

Originally, there were 6 sidings, but I needed the switches elsewhere… :stuck_out_tongue: Next is the approach to Lairds from Palouse.

These are photos of the city of Palouse, WA. When I finally get all the track laid, I’ll start on the buildings. That is Aristo’s barn. I had to remove the badly warped roof and replace it with cedar shingles from the dollhouse department. I’ve applied three coats of Tung Oil, hoping to stave off Bruce’s problem. We’ll see if it works

One interesting thing about Palouse is the street running.

This is BS Junction. Not related to the Bluestone Southern

Next we come to State Line Curve, on the way to Potlatch. Future project, model the Palouse River.

This photo is by Tom Hillebrandt. The future site of Potlatch, ID, in the distance just in front of my lovely bride’s chicken coop. I’ve promised to build her a better coop, someday…

I haven’t named the wye, yet. Any suggestions? For now, this is White Rock. I stole the track plan from TOC, changed it a bit to suit my needs, and then filed off the serial numbers.

Now, on to Princeton, Stanford, Deary and finally Bovill in the distance. I’m using the method developed by our friend, Richard Smith. I used 2 X 6 (lumber (from Potlatch Forest Industries, btw) because Richard said that he wished he had done so. So far, it is holding up well.

I covered up a host of mistakes at White Rock, but managed to repeat them on the last (so far) table. The hardware cloth is 4 feet wide, as is the weed cloth. So, naturally, I cut the cross pieces 4 feet wide. Doh! The fix (I hope) comes with the short pieces of 2X4 spaced along the sides to hold up the hardware cloth. I’ll let you know how it works out. The verticals holding up the curve to Deary/Bovill are temporary. Someday I may build a trestle here, but not today.

Steve - you have been busy! Looks good so far. I like this picture…

It shows that we modelers tend to plant our Dwarf Alberta Spruce trees too close to the track and keep them cut too short  Or is that just a shot of Andy’s railroad that you stole !!!

Nice to see the track plan come together Steve. Looks good.

Nice!

Very nice, Steve.
So are you going put in the river?
Ralph

Steve thats going to look awsome. You have a lot of space to play with.

Nice plan, scheme, and layout…

Very nice indeed Steve.

See your other posting about construction! Paul

Well, there was always the Pontiac Pacific Junction Rwy, that rambled along the Ottawa River from nowhere to nowhere, by way of nowhere*. The Pontiac (county) part was accurate enough; as for the Pacific, it might as well have been the Moon.

*that should get the good burghers of the Pontiac up in arms.

As for the layout … nice work!

Chris…I have another switch for you…

Thanks, Fred. Don't have a vehicle this weekend, but will try to get over soon. I'll give you a phone call to make sure you're there.
