I looking for cattle for my stock cars, would like longhorms, and other cattle that would be going to the slaughter house and also put them in the stock pens to be loaded into the cars. It would be nice if they made plaster molds in that size, it would sure cut the cost down. Any ideas out there.

PLAYMOBIL has longhorns. You could probably make a cast from them, and I don’t think it would take much effort to make them more model than toy. Even as a toy, they look pretty good from a distance or through the slats of a stock car.

If you have a “Tractor Supply” store near you they always have a large selection of animals in several scales (sizes).
At least the ones around here do.
ERTL makes quite a few in 1/32 scale. I model in 1/29 and have a herd of well over 100 1/32 cattle that look just fine. Sure are a lot more expensive then they were when I bought them.
The cattle in the following photo have been on te layout for over 10 years. A little faded but hanging in there.

The herd is PLAYMOBIL, which is sort of kind of 1:24. You can see the tracks in the background which can help you get a sense of scale.

Do not forget that Bachmann made a stock car with cattle heads poking in and out of the side. They made horse and reindeer also.
I have the reindeer car. Its pretty cool. The 4 heads are mounted on a swing arm so they move in and out of the windows as the train goes around the track for some animation.

Scale model farm animals are a little spendy, but I only needed four of them.
Their shipping was fast and the pigs worked out perfectly.

I have used Papo and Schleich figures in the past. They are sometimes available at the big box hobby and craft stores. They are a bit pricy, but not too bad if you stretch your purchases over a period of time. OR you could use them as foreground figures (near the doors) and put the less detailed cows at the inner parts of the stock car.

Does any one have a good reference for the height of various animals? there are models available from places like thing verse but they do not often give any info on the scale of the model.

I used Schleich for my farm scene. They make their cattle in several scales, fortunately the hobby store America’s Best Toy and Train, stocks all of them. Sheep, pigs, dogs, chickens, etc.
Joannes fabrics had animals also, get the discount coupon to make the price reasonable. Also they carry the quik grip glue which sticks to LGB plastic but can be ‘peeled’ off later. Again use a 50 per cent coupon or go to Walmart that is cheaper for this glue.
Amazon has some 1:20 animals, but since you’re just going to put them in cattle cars, I’m not sure I’d bother with 3D models - you certainly won’t be able to see much, if any, detail. I would probably just find some good pictures of cattle, scale them to 1:20 and print them out and stick them on some foam core board; it’s easy enough to cut and you could mirror the picture to paste on the other side.

At one time, you could purchase Playmobile sheep in bulk, for a great price…possibly you still can…
I had planned to use them to fill B’mann, and LGB stock cars, but soon tired of the idea, as it would look wrong to be returning sheep from a stock yard, and emptying the cars, and loading them would just become a boring job…
