Large Scale Central

Where is Everyone? Too cold for running live steam?

We need some activity, lets see photos/videos of recent runs.

Hopefully today I will get a little progress on my layout once I get finished with work this afternoon.

I think we all need to take a page from Shawn’s book, and make a micro layout for the garage. 22 degrees here in ct. brrrrrr…

I hope in my future is an alcohol fired loco, as the temp is just too cold to run gas fired loco. I can run my switcher and K4 since I put tender heaters in them, but the rest become shelf queens in winter.

I made a video last week. We need to get more live steam guys to post over here.

Ron you get the best steam plumes in the cold weather. The key is to prep everything indoors first.

Great video Shawn.

Nick your Climax will run in the cold. Your Roundhouse too with a cab mounted gas tank. Not get out there and run trains and chop wood!

Here is a quick ( at some points a very quick) loop around the Elise (E-levated Li-ve S-team & E-lectric) railway on a cool fall day with an Aristo Live Steam Mike.

J, ya know what?? you’re absolutely right. I keep having to lower the gas on my Mountaineer and even the Accucraft Dock Side switcher. Done splitting wood for this season, got 5+ cord so I sure got time to run trains, THANKS. will find time today for sure. nick jr

Jason, yes this is one of our club members layout in Cleveland, Ohio

Nick to prove you can run live steam with gas. This was straight Butane.

Shawn, not that cold just yet here, (I’m in S Jersey) love the plumes. I did run the Mountaineer yesterday, ran just fine. Thanks for the video. nick jr

As Shawn says; running Butane in the winter isn’t impossible. My basement storage area is pretty cool; so I pre-heat the gas tank with a lamp…

Runs great with very nice plumes…

I have not posted too much here but here is some steam fun form this fall. this was not that cold a day, but I do actually have a steam heater for the gas on this engine. I had built the fuel tank into the rear tank where it is not really heated by the boiler.

Eric, Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Great video Eric. Before you know it you will be steaming in the snow.

Eric, thanks for sharing.

That is some of the best live steam sound I have heard. Your wheel noise and coupling is great! Certainly very good filming and your layout looks great!

Eric,
Nice video and layout.
As I was watching the video this morning, my wife walked through the room.
Unknown to myself, she was behind me watching the video too.
Next thing I hear, “that’s what you need to get.”
Really?
It must be my lucky day. I probably should go buy a lottery ticket
Ralph

Yep Ralph you should buy one then bring it over and run. I usually run my Liv Steamers once or twice a month all year round. Sorry can not post videos. Later RJD

RJ,
I’ve been meaning to get back down to Georgia.
Hopefully I can make a weekend of it and visit Chris Haon again too.
