Where can I get brass rod to make handrails?

I was just at the hardware store to buy some nuts and bolts for my Mik project and had a look at the brass rod they carry for crafts. They wanted $5 for 3 12" pieces of 1/16 brass rod. The price seemed high. I have some but it is not enough to do the whole project.

What are you guys using to make custom handrails and where can I get some?

Best suggestion I have is McMaster-Carr Supply Co

Wire coat hanger is easy to get, I don’t know how it is to solder though

I agree with Bob. I get all my brass rod from Mcmaster or Ebay Burbank house of hobbies

Hobby Lobby has them and usually they are in stock at the local stores.

Just pick up some at the local welding supply store, 3 foot lengths but some times they only sell it in 1 pound tubes.

I stick with what I know…

That’s what I always get. But I didn’t know these 1/16 brass sticks were used for welding.

They don’t use them for welding it’s for brazing.

Right, brazing as in brass. Duh… Never done either, as you can tell.

do you know an electrician? just ask him, if he has some leftover offcuts from solid copperwire.

My LHS in Keene NH has K&S brass in 1/16 in the 1’ and 3’ lg sections. do not remember the $$ but very reasonable.

Building models regardless of what you are building will cost you much more than it did some 5-10 years ago. Being a modeler, I know when I need material for my project, I need it and the cost for one/two prices on brass, plastic, metal is the least of my worries. I will say that since I have been modeling for some 60 plus years, I have a very good supply of these items in stock, in most cases if I need one piece, I buy two, or three, my extra supply looks like a hobby shop. As far as where I get my stuff from is where I find it and who can get it to me the fastest. I’ve even been known to stop and look at something that people put out for trash pickup, you will be surprised what scrap metal and plastic is discarded that and how it can be reused to model something else.

How about 30’ for $9.99?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. The schnabel build can now move forward.

Wow, Rooster… I used to be able to buy these at Hobby Lobby… They no longer carry them… I used a ton of stuff out of that for different projects… Think I need to order one these. Thanks for posting this!!!.. Travis…

I use copper wire or brass wire. Brass wire tends to be ornamental. Copper isn’t cheap but if you buy solid core insulated wire you can get a pretty decent size roll that will last. The insulation has the added bonus of being ablento be used as larger fitting formlikenplumbing. And copper can be soldered.

I saw that Amazon ad for 30 pieces of 1/16 for $9.99 too. Looks like a deal. Only concern would be the makeup of the brass. Hard, soft etc.
