When is Enough?

When do you achieve having “enough” locos, cars, structures, figures, or other trains “goodies?”

After I won and paid an auction on Ebay yesterday, for an auto-carrier, the thought came to me: “When will I actually run this car, and what will I consist it with?” I already have more rolling stock than I can use at one time effectively. There are five or six buildings laying in wait for some unspecified future project or replacement. When is enough, enough?

Background:
The HedgeApple Falls RioGram RR is fairly compact, peanut shaped, having two independent cross-switched loops with length 60ft. and width ranging from 12ft to 25ft. Transition Era is modeled in structures and figures with a Family Events/History theme.
As the RR has evolved, several themed consists have developed:
1] “Where’s the Beef” consist w/stock cars and reefers - steam or FA/FB, 10-15cars.
2] Mixed freight consist w/boxcars, flatcars, tankers [rule of 3’s], 10-30 cars including some of above.
3] Streamliner consist [SF] - F-ABB & 8 cars.
4] Sierra passenger consist w/ Pacific or Mikado power.
5] Railbus
6] Rogers or Porter w/ small NG wood sided cars or logging cars.
7] Whimsical trains, ie. Easter Bunny Eggliner, Santa trains x3.
8] SD-45 [I know - out of Era - I wish I had gotten an E-8 instead.] that doesn’t get used much.

Although this is a small collection compared to many of you, the operating limitations of my layout are quickly reached. At most, only three of the consists can be operated at the same time. Easily, only two can be operated concurrently.

WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH? ['cause I still want more [;)] & Wifey thinks there is already too much [:(]]

Do any of you “feel my pain” or face this “dilemma?”

JimC.

It is never enough!
2/3 of the fun is collecting, not running.
As far as “He who dies with most trains” in our club,
I’m way behind some members.
Unless you are a Lone Wolf, a little competition comes into play also. (Gotta be the first one with this or that lokie or car)
The manufacturer will introduce something you’ve been waiting for, or a paint scheme, etc.
No, Jim, it’s never enough!

TOG

Dude…I’m approaching 50, thats 5 - 0 motive pieces, namely locos, gooses, or speeders…and I dont even have a layout currently.

My definition of “enough” depends soley on the avalable storage shelves, when I fill up the shelves, thats “enough”…until I build more shelves.

I take a different approach. Designed the layout, decided what would run on it (era, local), figured out the mix of rolling stock (just like I did in HOm).

Anything that is being bought is bought with those criteria in mind. Saves a lot of money and space!

Whenever possible I get the “stuff” on eBay, there I set a limit on how much the item is worth to me. I get it or I don’t get it!

OTOH I think you guys are doing just great, someone needs to keep the economy going!

The only other Santa Fe stuff I have is a USAT caboose, I am a Pennsy fan, but I just had to have a set of Chrome E8’s. I have no idea why. When is ENOUGH ENOUGH, good question??? Nick Jr

I have to say that with me…there will never be enough. Though I must say I’m tempted to rethink that on occasion. It’s my opinion that part of the obsession is fueled by the fact that we can never own the locomotive we really want or have the place to run it…that would be our favorite 1:1 locomotive. I’ve gone to a change in philosophy which is to build my locomotives and rolling stock from now on. Maybe that will slow me down some…(fat chance). Currently on the builder’s table is 5 locomotives, 6 box cars 2 flats and a caboose…in 3 different scales…

THERE WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH…!!

That word does not exsist in my vocavulary. Later RJD

Addition to my earlier reply.

In any household there’s room for one pack rat and it isn’t me in our household. But it sometimes drives me to distraction, which means “clean-ups” happen at convenient times and the results are not noticed because there is still too much stuff being “pack ratted”.

Like Andre, we are in the middle of a kitchen remodeling. Oh what a glorious opportunity to toss out all kinds of “stuff”! Garage Sale written all over it!

He who dies with the most toys, wins !

Jim,
for some the joy of collecting is as strong as the desire to actually run their trains. There is no such limit imposed as ‘enough’. I have experienced the joy of a parcel at my front door many times. It is like eagerly anticipating a present on a birthdate. The anticipated arrival emotions are matched only by the emotion achieved when the contents are found to be undamaged and in perfect condition. A gentle shake of the box on arrival is fraught with expectation of misuse in handling.

If the item is a treasured 'collectable' then it is lovingly disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt, replacing any parts not acceptable. The item is then test-run and then sealed and stored, not to be seen again for many years. This is my enjoyment gained from collecting. My other enjoyment is to purchase stock actually for use. This involves extensive altering of the original item to suit my needs. There is no such thing as enough.

Darn right!

And to make sure he can take them along he gets cremated and then buried in 45 ft high cube container along with all his toys!

22,000 locomotives in the USA and 1.3 million freight cars, according to “Freight Train.”

My lovely bride thinks that my 12 locomotives and 40 or so freight cars and 5 passenger cars is too many?

Balderdash and poppycock!

JC,

I’ll admit to having the same thoughts. I have FAR more equipment than I can store easily much less run! I do tend to “collect” items I like which explains part of it. Its a poor term for it tho as I don’t consider any of my stuff COLLECTIBLE, but usable.

I am also a confessed pack rat and bargain hunter. I’ll buy most anything if it goes for a price I think is cheap enough to make money on if I should choose to sell it. That accounts for much of the stored rolling stock and a fair number of locos as well.

I run a few favorites over 90% of the time and the other the remainder. I do use the remainder as cash cows to fund the purchase of something else that catches my eye.

I could sell 90% of the stuff and buy one or two items I dream about, say an Aster live steamer and the like. I have thought about doing so several times but have never had the time to devote to such a serious venture!

Maybe when I retire…

I’ve just finished removing all the doors on the old kitchen cabinets - they are solid oak! SWMBO is sick and tired of “Oak”.
“The guys” can have all the other stuff.

I’m on my way to the shop to try how nicely they will rip into ties and other raw timber! Report to follow!

I have hit the limit and then some. I am NOT buying any more equipment.

I have just enogh locos to operate the railroad, and enough cars to serve the customers.

As far as Rail Op is concerned; I may have a few too many cars.

I look at the Model Railroad as an operating railroad that operates for a purpose.

The IPP&W is a short line that serves a section of the country and only runs so many trains each operating session.

We don’t just run in circles. The computer decides at random what cars are in what train, and where they are going. It also decides what cars the train will pick up and where.

I have 5 locomotives in service and two waiting for adjustments before entering service. I have 3 spare locos in case the ones in service need parts or fail when parts are not available. There are no other locos on the market that would be justified for the service we need them for; so I have no need for further locos.

As far as rolling stock is concerned; I have over 150 cars, and about 30 in boxes, out of service. I don’t need any further rolling stock.

I have about 20 passenger cars of various types, and only need about 8…

My little World is not a Garden Railroad; it’s a MODEL RAILROAD.

Hi Gary,

I have a tall vertical poster in the train room that says “He who dies with the most toys, still dies!”.

I’ve wished it was just trains. Jack

Yup… just want em all…

http://timothydehan.com/redmondcreekrr/rollingstock.htm

hehehehehehe

When one imposes a limit on one’s purchases then one is ignoring anything else available on the market. Our hobby is everchanging and so should our railroad.

In so far as ‘dying with the most toys’, well unless their is joy in dying, then we all purchase our toys to enjoy whilst we are living. How we express that joy is entirely our perogative.

I’m with HJ, if I read him right, I have set an era for myself, and I buy whatever fits that era. Sort of self-limiting since there is really not the selection as in HO, for example.

I’m with Fred in that I like operations, and trying to build a model railroad for that purpose, so more freight cars than are useable for operations are wasted.

I don’t collect anything, since I like running them, they get wear, bits break off, but I enjoy running them.

Other than these guidelines, I never consider when it’s too much!

Regards, Greg

Hi Jim,
As you well know, I feel your pain! I long ago reached the point where I could reasonably justify new purchases for my small railroad! Why did I buy that Heisler when I really wanted the 55-ton Shay? I already have a Porter so why do I need a new one? A K-27? I already have two Connies so why contemplate not one but TWO K-27’s??!!! (*Sigh) Why? Because the joy is in acquiring something new! I have slowed down as I haven’t yet purchased the three-truck Shay yet! My next purchases will be the 1:20.3 passenger cars from AMS! I suppose that means that a bunch of my 1:22.5 stuff will go on ebay or will be boxed up and saved for Eric (my boy who loves trains!) I guess “enough” is what we (together with our spouses) decide it is!
