Large Scale Central

Wheel sizes Truck types

Is there a good resource for wheel sizes (24" vs 26") and truck sizes and types as they relate to rolling stock of the southwest narrow gauge RR’s?

Or can someone help me out with a brief list? There seem to be a lot of variations out there.

Thanks in advance.

Charley

Check out both Phil’s Narrowgauge and Hartford Products. Phil is an advertiser here, not sure about Bob Hartford. I will edit later and add Hartford’s web linkk (if someone doesn’t beat me to it),

Edit:

Ditto Rick below. I thought as he did that you were talking scale models. Sorry…

Charley,

Go right to the source.

Gary is the best there is for semi-scale wheels for any purpose.

Edit

Crap,

Just dawned on me your talking prototype wheels and trucks. Duhhh, that’s why it is in the prototypes forum. Check out the book “The American Railroad Freight Car” by White. a lot of information on the development of wheels and trucks.

Charley,

After those unhelpful replies, I thought I’d add another one. No, I don’t think there is one resource that covers most of the variations. There were several builders of rolling stock (Carter Bros, Billmeyer & Small, etc.,) and the wheel sizes depended on the use and size of the car.

John White wrote two reference books: “The American RR Freight Car” and “American Narrow Gauge Railroads” but they don’t specifically address SW narrow gauge. Carstens “Slim Gauge Cars” booklet has plans for many different cars, which might help.

All you can really do is decide what car you are modelling and do some research. Check if there is one in a museum somewhere, check the books written about that particular railroad, etc.

Thanks all. You have given me some good leads.
