What's special about 26 Jan?

Heads Up (or is it Down?) for Australia Day .

From an Old Pom to one of the Colonies . Cheers , mates .

Mike M

Mike,
the day represents the day that the governor raised the union jack at Sydney Cove, commencing the enforced resettlement of the cream of British society, at the time. Once considered a stigma, it is now socially fashionable to have a convict ancestor. Of cause, some first fleet settlers were freemen, or soldiers sent to enforce tryanny on our shores against both the convicts and the indigenous population.

Yep. Good luck to all you Aussies for 2010.

Aussie!! Aussie!! Aussie!! Oi!! Oi!! Oi!!

Brian. You need spectacles.
That is POM.
As in POME. Prisoner of Mother England.
A POM is what Aussies call us Brits.

and somebody needs to know about NYC native sarcasm!

-Brian :stuck_out_tongue:

Brian , you need to learn subtle British humour .
Tony , I am an old porn , I just missed off the word “merchant”

Now , everybody , give the Ozzies their one day of fame----------though not many will notice , they’re normally falling down drunk anyway , celebrating their release from bondage . Except for the ones who are into bondage . But we won’t go there . Unless you want . Oh alright then , don’t , see if I care . Huff .
I served alongside the Australian Armed Forces for a while (No 1 Sqdn , RAAF , Lincolns ), and they speak funny—like Americans do , but different .
Also , at Maralinga and Woomera , we used aborigine trackers to find our misguided test missiles . They showed us how to make them boomerang shaped and we blew up the launch pad .
Fun days .

I'm proud to say that my own dad fought for the independence of his country against the yoke of imperialism and oppression - 800 years of it.

Yup, the day the British Government handed over Dublin castle to the Free State representatives of Ireland, mainly into the very hands of General Michael Collins [RIP], my dad was set free from his eight year prison sentence for helping to destroy a police barracks sentence ‘by means of feloniously setting and igniting certain igniferous materials and occasioning the incident of arson, contrary to the King’s Peace, in the county of Cork, on May 11th, 1921.’

As you can imagine, his record [including his ‘pardon’] was a matter of great interest when I applied to join a certain part of Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.

Anyhow, Sir, - G*d Bless Australia, and a Very Happy Birthday!

Here then, didn't know you was a pom guv! Regard our history, I'm a pure blood from South Oar-strailya, no convicts in my past, all the convicts were shipped to either New South Wales or Tasmania, when they escaped they moved into Victoria, and that state still wants to steal whatever it can from the other states!! LOL

Wayne , you claim to model S Aust. railways .

Just a bit of track plonked on the sand , then? No bends ? The Nullarbor Plain must be the easiest layout to make .
Your Road Trains are bigger than your railways .

At 5:15AM this morning they played the official Aussie national anthem and shortly after the unofficial one. I always thought that was “Waltzing Mathilda”, apparently not so … “Pub with no beer” it is!

Ireland history and Scottish history and the way they were/are tied in with the English has always been of interest to me. Not really sure why though. Recalling from history though–when the Irish Free State gained independence in 1921 they fought a civil war among themselves for a short time that was also pretty rough.

Australian military history has also been of interest to me. The screwing the Aussie’s got in the Boer Wars and the screwing the Aussies got when they were tasked to land in Turkey during WW1 were fu**ed.

On the humourous plane here, a couple of years ago at the Naval Post Grad School in Monterey I was speaking with a group of officer students when I was helping them on a transportation project. One of them was an Aussie and I said something to the effect of how are things in Canada and I got a good lesson in Aussie cussing eventhugh I could not understand a word of it.
