What to do in York?

So, aside from the ECLSTS and the infamous Drag and Brag what else is there to do in the York area? I know it’s a broad question. I wish the Horseshoe curve museum was open a little earlier. I’ve been to the Gillitzen (sp?) tunnels, deep cut, rockport bridge, Altoona, Strasburg and the PA museum of rail. Just looking for something different. Anyone going to have layouts open?

Thanks for any help.

Terry

There is a great museum not far from the event: York Agricultural & Manufacturing Museum. Well worth the visit:Museum Link

Hi Terry,

Check this out, civil war 4-4-0 built by Kloke Loco works, you might be able to get a ride on the train if they don’t close for the winter.

If they are open this is a must see. Honestly it’s more fun chasing it than riding it in my opinion. There is also Muddy Creek Forks but they will not be open however you can still tool around the area…http://www.maandparailroad.com/ . Enola yards and the Rockville bridge are about 45minutes north as well. If you want to do Enola and Rockville …message me as I can direct you to some good observation areas.

Yes, Steam into history is a really cool trip.

There is a good restaurant in Northumberland. It is the old Northumberland train station. If you have dinner there, you most often can enjoy some good switching action, while you eat. The lighting is good for night photography, if you are there after dark. Thursdays are “Buck an oyster” days, for a good feed of oysters if you enjoy them. They also have a fair choice of bheers on tap at the bar.

Closer to York is the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, which is VERY well worth a full day’s visit, along with the Strasbourg Railroad, and its train ride. You can visit both on the Sunday after the ECLSTS.

Then, never forget the fun, and fellowship found in “The Alcove”, at the show, where Ric Golding, and crew hold court, solving your problems, operating a switching pike, and usually hosting David Russell, Dave Marconi, and others, who provide comic relief, while letting you store your prized purchases, before you load them into your vehicle. They might even buy you a coffee, and charge it to my credit card…!!

Its too bad the toy train museum is closed during the winter. I always enjoyed seeing that.

Fred you have a credit card ???

Do not forge that the Harley factory offered tours daily during the week. It was a 45 minute walk when I did it.

Call them and check it out.

Will there be any 32mm gauge track there to run anything on? I can’t bring a steamer, but I might just squeeze in a little battery-powered narrow-gauge something or other.

There’s a dual gauge live steam layout usually set up. Not sure what the gauge is on the narrow gauge part.

Caution: The MA&PA Historical Society is not open until Memorial Day.

If you go to The Stauffer’s Factory Store in York, you can satisfy all of your cookie and chip needs at a good discount. And if you don’t want to do the Pretzel Factory Tour, they carry pretzels there too. I will try to locate the hours as I think they close at 3 on Saturday.

Tac,

The Aikenback live steamers have a 32mm rail inside one of the G-1 tracks, as Murray brings his O-gauge live steamers. You can sign up for a 1/2 hour run. Just ask for Mike Moore.

That’s about as long as the batteries would last on my teeny little Ruston quarry loco - that’s do just fine. Thank you, Pete.

Sorry, I had the old Hanover Factory Store. Please look up on the internet, it is the Stauffer’s Factory Retail Outlet.

Forgot about the Middletown Hummelstown RR it’s across the river from Enola (well sorta) and they will be running the Easter Bunny Express that Saturday which is right up your alley so you better set the reservations now. http://www.mhrailroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015Brocj.pdf

They do have an ex Canadian National 2-6-0 #91 they restored http://www.steamlocomotive.info/F112003.cfm and the bone yard is pretty cool to check out. Amtraks Keystone Corridor tracks are right behind it and just up the road is the famed Three Mile Island. Now I know this is gonna be crushing to you Terry but the next Falmouth goat race isn’t till September so you won’t be able to see that… http://www.falmouthgoatrace.org/
