I use the 14.8V 2200 and 4400 mah Li-Ion packs and chargers from All-Battery.com.

Them’s the ones I use. I get the 2600 mAh packs because I want the longest run times for the given space, and the price per mAh is the same (1.7 cents per). I was originally going to get one or two of the 4400 mAh packs as well, but it fits in only three of my locos at the moment, and with the run times I’m getting from the 2600 mAh packs, I’m not sure it’s worth the expense. All but one of my locos has removable batteries, though, so I can easily swap them out. I’ve got one loco that’s a dedicated battery, so I crammed the 4400 mAh pack into that space. I get from 7 to 9 hours or more off of that pack in that loco (LGB mogul chassis).
Later,
K
The Li-Ion batteries are pricey, but sound like the way to go.
EDIT: The 2600 MAH isn’t too bad, under $50, and the 2200’s are under $40 which would work nice for a small shifter.
