What paint to use?

I want to paint the plastic “coal” loads in some LGB ore cars to look like coal.
Or to look like iron ore.
Any suggestions?

For coal, I’d paint it with black paint and sprinkle on some real coal (if you can get it), or charcoal. Aquarium charcoal looks pretty good.

For iron ore, maybe a dark brown paint sprinkled with rust.
