What is this pipe for?

The small diameter pipe going into the top of the valve…

Thats the oiler pipe. The other end goes to the Oiler in the cab. Steam is sent thru the oiler and a drip of oil is added to it, it then goes to the top of the stem valve, and the oily stem is sent thru the valve and the cylinder. It’s how the system gets it’s lubrication.

Dave, that brings up a question of mine. The oil supply; How big of an oil tank is on a locomotive? And where do they hide it?
