Large Scale Central

What have you custom built for your RR?

To help this thread to continue: Here is another of my custom jobs. It is a handcranked steam donkey made from scraps and recycled items etc… Pictured is the donkey site from last summer. The highline is used to bring harvested veggies from the garden below to the train tracks above. You can see a bean hanging in the air ready to be loaded onto a waiting gondola. Exciting times in the garden.

Keep the photos of your custom trains and buildings coming. I like to see them and I know there are alot of others that do too. Todd

When I first started this Backyard Railroad madness about 6 years ago I recycled an old election sign and a beat-up and well weathered piece of 1/4" plywood from the backyard into my first three structures, two engine sheds (front) and a simple mine (rear). The windows were made with strips of vinyl siding, stapled to the wood. I think finally these buildings are going to get homes soon! I believe it makes most sense to lay track, get trains running, and only then worry about buildings…

At last (sigh)... Someone understands me.:D

What am I gonna post here next? I know, the very next buildings I made, This little Wild-West firehall from Brick Price’s narrow gauge book and out of the amazing +500 page book, ‘Ghost Towns of the West’, the famous and picturesque Barkerville Church, from up there in the Yukon, both as flats. I have very little space in my urban backyard, especially for non-revenue buildings such as these, which I really don’t have time for… but anyway, I broke down to make these two, OK I guess as long as they are flat, maybe nailed to the fence… I photographed them on my summer switching pike out in the breezeway. Both bells were brought home from a wedding reception… The wood is lath, ripped out of our house during multiple renos, and the trim boards are stir stix etc. No glue used, and I don’t paint or weatherproof the outdoor stuff.

JLF

You need a refresher trip along the Gold Rush Trail from Vancouver up to Barkerville. After that you can carry on to the Yukon (another two days drive).

I was sure one of you BC-ers would catch me out on this. I am suitably humbled and contrite. What amazing distances!

OOOPs! That second shot of the sawmill is really huge!!! Not sure how to fix it!!! Any ideas?

-Kevin.

Keep them pics coming and thanks for the thread Todd.

Lotsa’ good stuff, Dieseldude. I love your Anitaville tank. Please tell us how you made the bottom of the tank body, and especiallyespecially those ‘L-section’ corner posts. Thanks!

BTW: I’d delete that big picture and resize it your home computer. 800px max side to side is plenty. Even 500 is probably enough.

Kevin,

At first glance I thought the water tower said ‘Margaritaville’ All kidding aside, the tower looks cool. One of our club members is building a couple for the club layout using spend R22 canisters to hide the sprinkler heads in. Neat idea. I am going to plagiarise your saw mill, it is simple enough to do my bidding as well. Thanks for the great shots.

Bob C.

John- Thanks for the kind words. I’m not much of a metal worker, so I did a little ‘improv’ on the tank bottom. The bottom of the tank was actually made from a pot lid that I bought at the Goodwill store (please hold your laughter to a mild roar!!!). It just happened to be the same diameter as the coffee can ‘tank’ (coincidence?.. maybe). The platform that fits between the two parts was made from wood. I routed a groove in the bottom so that the lid would fit flush. The ‘L-section’ corner posts are some aluminum angles that I had laying around the shop. The cross bracing is made from some heavy duty coat hanger wire that I found in my wife’s closet… she was not very happy. The roof is made of some scrap copper flashing. The blinking LED is from Radio Shack. BTW- I noticed that your from Toronto. I’m in Buffalo, NY. If you happen to be south of the border, send me an email and you can check out the tank in person.

-Kevin.

Bob- Thanks!!! I have a confession… I plagiarized my sawmill from a kit that Walthers makes for HO (Mountain Lumber Co.). It just looked ‘right’ and it was easy enough to build.

Nuttin’ wrong with that, Kevin. Did you remember to file off the serial numbers? :stuck_out_tongue:
