What color?

We have had an old LGB 2117D around forever–just like the one below. It’s seen better days–hard use at the hands of kids. I recently repaired the engine and scraped up some parts to replace what was worn. I’m going to put a remote control in it (if I can make it fit) and rename it for the “Washington & Old Dominion.”

The W&OD bought several used locomotives from the New York El, and while they weren’t exactly like this one they were 0-4-0 tank engines. I’m going to probably change out the smokestack and the headlamp, but keep the “cowcatcher”. I’ll argue that the W&OD added it for their rural routes–or would have if they had not been perpetually broke. Maybe I should sand the “eyebrows” off the windows? I sanded the molded-in “LGB” logo and took the LGB decals and silver stripes off. Now I need to paint it. So what color? I want something cheerful, something that black lettering will stand out against–I’m going to try to letter it myself using injket transfer paper. But I don’t want it to be too “toy-like.” Brian, what color is that nice cream-colored boxcab of yours?

It’s Rustoleum High Heat Almond (from the home depot). I use the High Heat Black a lot, too, as it has more of a weathered black appearance. I used the Almond and Black combo on my 7/8’s rail truck, also, and really like the way it looks. It is becoming the unofficial color scheme of the C&A. The rail truck and boxcab before weathering -

Not at all, especially since you have a model of me and my tractor on your layout  .

Hey Mike, cow catcher on rural routes? Hmmmm … how about all those times when the bulls are stampeding on Wall Street?

The way the market went today, it should be called a “bear-catcher.”

Brian, the Rustoleum hi-temp is neat stuff. It goes on very easy and covers a multitude of sins, and it has a nice texture too

Yes, it has a nice flat finish. I also use the almond (along with a flat brown and camo dark earth colors) as a dust finish for weathering freight cars.
