What about other printers ?

Ken , thank you , that’s really kind .

I just cannot seem to get it right when trying to post pictures , so I’ll have to either stop or get taught how , I can’t keep bothering others like yourself . I know you don’t mind doing it , but there has to be a limit .

cheers ,

Mike

Actually it’s not all that hard to learn. I use PaintShop Pro for editing my pix, but I’ve been using that for close to 20 years, so I’m very comfortable with it. Most photo editing programs can resize photo’s and also compress them, it’s just a matter of finding the editing tool that does that. I also have Adobe Photoshop, but haven’t quite gotten comfortable with it. So PSP is usually my fall back program, if I want to do it quickly.

When my photos come out of the camera they’re about 3000 pixels x whatever in size. I’ll resize them to about 1000x whatever. To fit on here it’s best to use 800 X whatever. They fit better. Plus they use up less space on a server. I’m no computer expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I manage to muddle my way through it. It just take a bit of patience and practice, like anything else.

I don’t even bother going into a paint program. I first copy them into my \temp directory and then I change the size of them using Image Resizer. It can re-size all selected pictures at once; I typically change them to 800 x 600. Then I upload them to the web and post them.

I’ll have to remember that.

I don’t remember how functional “Paint” was in the Win95 version, but using WinXP - we still have a few copies of that OS running - it is a piece of cake to resize, the only snag: one needs to remember the ratio of the original e.g. 3:2 (or whatever) because the “Keep/maintain ratio” selection is missing.

Get yourself IRFANVIEW on Google. Its free. Any pics you have can be thumbnailed by it…resized, saved and then used. I usually resize around 5 x 4" or less.

Two weeks ago I purchased a Silhouette Cameo, and played with it a little. Its basically a computer directed cutter. Supposed to cut about .015 styrene, but I dont have any handy. It does scribe .030 nicely, so Im thinking for scribed boxcar sides it would be good. Ive cut out some vinyl for car lettering, and working on a stencil for painting the name on the side of the colliery. For around $200, its not bad.

Just ordered one myself along with another 3d printer and a 3d printer pen…

The only other printer I have is a Brother P-Touch 1500 PC which I bought to print white or black on transparent for data markings on cars etc. etc…

Hans, I have a P-Touch, but I never thought of doing that.

Ross , I tried what you suggested and it tried taking over my computer , it also made a lot of things become “default” which I also did not want . It even made my search engine change to Bing which is a bloody dreadful mess up .

I had to uninstall and perform system recovery to fix things .

I have a feeling that something may have got garbled in the download , and last thing yesterday I downloaded a couple of pictures and they tried to get into the (now uninstalled) Irfan .

As you seem happy with it , when you download a picture , do you still have the alternative of where to save it to ? I had no such alternative , but went back to my Default selection and reselected Picasa and so far things are back as they were .

I am not trying to knock your suggestion , just trying to find what it should do .

I am in favour of a programme that will easily resize for mailing .

Mike

David,

If it prints colour on clear tape (TZ laminated) you could give it a try. While it does what I need I certainly wish I’d bought the big brother (pun intended) that prints at 360 dots.

Gee Mike, I use Infranview without any problems. But then I don’t have nor use Picasa.

Hans, I will have to look into trying what you suggest, when I find my P touch. Its hiding somewhere.

David , I am only trying to get advice as to what may be making it incompatible . I am glad that yours works OK .

Picasa works OK too , but I thought I would try Irfanview because Ross mentioned it .

I have not given up on it , I have been looking for a second photo sorter .

Mike

Mike, Since its been so long since I installed Infranview, I do not remember if there is a setting, during install, as to what it will take over and call its own or not. I wish I could help, but I just do not remember.

Righto David , thanks .

Actually it does it all itself once you hit the download button .

Mike

During the installation of any software, you need to be vigilant to not download other optional software. I’ve installed irfanview on hundreds of computers, yes hundreds, and have never ALLOWED it to change my search engine, nor did I allow it to change all the default program settings.

By the way, to change the default program associated with a particular file extension does not require a system restore.

I’m not posting this to chastise you for not understanding computers, I’m posting it so other people will realize that irfanview is a good program and not dangerous to install, nor will it “take over” your computer.

Greg makes a good point… Most freebie programs include ride along programs which fund the freebie stuff. Accordingly the ride along stuff is an option which is listed or noted as you progress, you CAN option out of these ride along programs during the install, I find most don’t read each window during install and allow the ride along’s to be installed congruently. This a very common practice, simply pay attention and opt out as you progress through the install.

I neglected to note that I too have a Silhouette Cameo, I haven’t done much with it in the scheme of things but find it useful for vinyl cutting and cutting out templates for painting and scaling material of odd shapes and sizes such as wrapping a boiler. And played with it for producing skyline casing templates on my SP Pacific project.

Michael

Greg , thanks for your comment . I do realise it was not totally for my benefit (heaven forfend!)

When I hit download , an indicator of progress appeared , nothing else . The next thing that happened was the programme opened itself . Things descended further into chaos from there on .

I take your point about system restore , but it did cure the problem . I did that on the advice of Hewlett Packard who also took over my computer remotely to get rid of a glitch (non specified) . Whatever it was , the computer was ok before the download .

The computer now works OK again .

I do not as a rule download and allow piggy back stuff , they are generally offered as an add-on as you know and I always decline them . There was nothing other than a download progress indicator appeared and I did not once leave the computer during that time .

Mike

For those of you who think I am uneducated , I am trying to improve myself by reading .

My current read is “The Study of Anti-Gravity” . I can’t put it down

Good points Greg,

Any program I download, after checking the reaction, complaints and other matter related to it, is being saved to my designated download file. And from there it gets “custom” installed i.e. I decide what gets installed.

I learned that when Win3.11 was still the cat’s meow and haven’t seen any reason to change the procedure. Doing it the “Auto/Easy” way is certainly convenient, but I like being in control.

Yes , that’s exactly what I normally do too , but was unable so to do . Fault , you see .
