Large Scale Central

What a day!

The weather office changes the weather errr I mean their forecast on a regular basis. Yesterday was supposed to be gorgeous in the Thompson Canyon, today was supposed to be so-so.

Today was SUPER, not only the weather and the temperature. Lots of train traffic.

Yes, it didn’t happen unless I post the videos. It will take me a while to get them ready, I’m already a week behind!

When CP Rail started using their new SD30C-ECO

(The SD30C-ECOs are basically rebuilt from SD40-2 cores and frames, and powered by a new 12 cylinder 3000 hp 12-710G3F engine.)

on the coal unit trains, my first question was “Will they still set them out at Geddis, the way they used to with the AC4400/ES4400?”.

The answer is “No” and the reason is plain to see when one stands at the abyss in Thompson Canyon as the coal empties roll by.

Do you see it?

No

No is right, as in no exhaust and stationary fans on the helper unit, just along for a free ride on the return trip.
Good move since they run the three 4400 units more or less at the limit (a little birdie told me) with a fully loaded 152 car unit train in DPU. The 5000 series does the extra slugging on the way to the coast and will be there for the whole distance - for those occasions when another traction motor gets fried.

Hans, without a steam plume, I cant tell.

Sheeeesh David, are you living in no…no…no…stalgia-land?
