Large Scale Central

Whadizit?

Can any one identify these two species of whatevertheyare? I line in the panhandle of Florida, and both of these seem to take direct sun well, normal rain without additional watering also seems to be OK. This first one is kinda nice. Small, fine leaves with a small white flower. Does not grow tall, or seems to not grow real fast. It grows ‘wild’ in the back yard and was considering using it for ground cover on the railroad when I get to building. There is a bunch of it in a location I will be doing some dirt work (moving it) and was wondering if it could be lifted, cleaned up and palletized for later use.

The second one is just a low and slow grower, but same questions apply.

I apologize for the pics, I didn’t think to take the pics until after I mowed the grass. Thanks for any help. Bob C.

I have no idea what it is, but they both have that “invasive” look to them. Better take them to the county extension office for identification.

I tried to use a “native” plant, and found out that I was using a noxious weed.

Steve,

I already have those - it’s called Chinese Tallow (Popcorn Trees). The state considers them an invasive species and has no heart burn if you cut them down. I find they make great logs for logging lines. They grow quick, have a fairly fine grain, and a relatively scale bark structure. If properly dried they are great.

Thanks for the idea to take them to the local extension office. I am not sure where it is, but I do have a phone book.

Im no horticulturalist (sp?) Lol I cant even spell it right!!! But the top looks a lot like my Irish Moss. I’ll compare your photo with my stuff tonight. The 2nd photo I have no idea. The local extension office is a great idea.

First, I learned from the Army, that if its green at Fort Bliss, it must be a weed, so you pulled it. Later, I learned if it almost looked green on a US Coast Guard Base and it had to be cut, manicured and kept trim. Now I know it something I have to cut or take care of every week, so it gives me insentive to make the railroad bigger.

I was looking in the latest GR and in the Miniscaping article. There is a plant Don Parker refers to as Astroturf. It looks very similar to the top photo. Wonder if that is what it is.

Might be… however you did give me an idea. I think I will post over at the GR forum and see what falls out.
