Large Scale Central

West Virginia & Kentucky No2

The Mojenator has kicked into OH-MY-GAWD mode and things are about to happen…presenting the latest victime …errr volunteer to occupy space on the Alter of the Razorsaw…

Yes…its is a Bachmann 2-6-0 and she has a date with the Screwdriver of Destiny! Of course, its all Kevin Strong’s fault…his molestation of said locomotive (locomotives?) were the inspiration, but it didn’t help that Fr. Fred had a basic black 2-6-0 surplus to the IPP&W’s needs. The locomotive was smuggled across the border by Bruce Chandler after the Invasion of 2012 and was brought to home rails by agents of the WV&K RR Co. Whats going to happen? Welp its going to be a general modernization. No2 was probably one of 4 similar locomotives purchased in the late 1880s, the other three going to scrap to keep No2 running. There was probably a wreck or roundhouse fire that required an extensive rebuild at some point that added to her longevity. The cowcatcher will be replaced with footboards and a knuckle coupler, her assignment these days being switching service, but with the occasional nod to go over the mainline. A steel cab will replace the wood one, and the fluted domes replaced by rounded ones. Electric head and backup lights will be applied in place of the kerosene one, which of course necessitates a dynamo somewhere on that boiler too. I might replace the toolbox on the rear of the tender with an air reservoir, and add a 2nd airpump. Will be applying hungryboards to raise the coal capaccity (and make it easy to hide the batteries as well. She’ll get a more subdued older version of the WV&K paintjob and be weathered to be hardworking but cared for, like most WV&K locomotives…

When will it be done?

You mean that guy that picked it up really was your brother? I didn’t think it would ever get to you. :o

I had always hoped that Bachmann themselves would have updated , modernized the 4-4-0 , and the 2-6-0 also , there are so very many RRds that had modernized 4-4-0s . Yes I know they were standard gauge .

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I just re-fit mine with Airwire and Phoenix sound, and it sure runs purty…

Later,

K

It began around 0900 this morning…it wasn’t pleasant, the patient resisted to the last…Finally the boiler was removed from the frame and all the Bachmann crapola yanked out…

Ooooooh the HUMANITY!!! But by lunchtime, the new motor leads had been run as had wires for the new headlight, and most of the parts from an Annie that had been scrapped had been sourced and placed…

After lunch. a KD 920 was added to the pilot, theres still more detailing and fleshing out to do to her, but that is an operating coupler on her nose.

Oringinally I was just gonna drop the Annie’s cab on the deck and call it a day, but I wasn’t happy. The cab was a little too tall, and a little too long so out came the razor saw for a little surgery…

Now I like her looks and lines…spot on with what I had in mind…did have to fabricate a new rear wall for the cab…

Tommorrow I hop on the tender and hope to finish up the pilot, and perhaps get as far a s thinking about doing the RC install…

I like what your minds eye sees there , its looking good . :- )

How does the ten wheeler domes come off to move them , did you razor saw them off at the saddle ?

Thanks

Nice work Bart. You’re getting some nice lines there.

Will this newest creation be heading out to Illinois in November for a test drive? Or don’t you know yet?

If I don’t have a trunk full of covered hoppers, they’re just might be room for it…

The domes just pop right off the Annie boiler. The Saddles are the original 2-6-0 ones, the Annie domes fit with only minor modification.

Can’t plan that far ahead yet Ken…

Well, just stick your thumb out if ya can, I'll get ya on the way by.......;)

Is it done yet? Looks good so far

ITs gettin there…as Sheldon Cooper would say I had a “non optional social convention” to deal with today …had to make an appearance at Moms Family Reunion…but there was food…and the annoying members of the family no longer come round since my Grandmother’s passing… i did finish up the pilot, instead of footboards I grafted on the Annie pilot I found, added some bracing for the draft gear, added a cut lever and the airline for the brakes…

Still need to add a 2nd airpump but wasn’t feeling the mood today, so I looked at the tender…removeed the cast coal laod and glued it inside the shell so its outta site but get to keep the weight. Also removed the tool boxes to make way for the extended coal load and moved the tool box from the rear to the tender deck to make way for an air reservoir back there…

Lookin’ good Bart! The proportions are coming out great too. I redid my 4-4-0 although not nearly so extensively or expertly as you’re doing to the 2-6-0.

Hi Bart:

  1. another option for the cab is the HLW round roof cab if you want to try that out

  2. if one wanted to model a 2-4-4T loco using this loco as a starting point, is the fire box ( the block between the two rear drivers ) removeable and can the two front drivers be used as a drive unit on its own ( after swapping the rear driver for the blind driver )

I already got the Annie cab in place, and since I didn;t have an HLW cab in stock… No the Firebox isn’t removeable its hiding the motor, the rear driver has a sound cam on it and is just along for the ride…the blind drive is actually the one with the drive gear on it, so a swap between the two would be a massive amount of work… you can see it basically in this photo the chasis is upside down with the motor/gearbox partially tilted out the “bottom”…

So after work I butchered up the tender a bit…first I cust some openings in the tender top…

Making a nice place to stash a battery!

Also got the core for the air reservoir built…

I find myself doing that quite often, but I still have to use a saw or knife to get it done. :);) Nice work Bart.

So after a year of sitting negelcted on the bench…she spoke to me…note that I had installed a rear headlight and couple and mounted the airtank. Also did the RC/Battery install (no sound in this one unless someone wants to donate a Sierra to the cause…) But I hooked it all up and it WORKED!!!
