OK…I’m getting into the planning stages for a new build…I have an Aristo 2-8-2 that I traded for years ago, with something like this in mind…prolly the only thing tha tI will keep from the original is the lead and trailing trucks and the mech itself. My Question is…what do I need to look for as far as its generation and subsequent problems it might have? What are absolute fixes that I need to apply to the mechanism, drivers, valve gear before I dig in and have all sorts of work that has to be undone to reapir stuff I should have fixed right off the bat?
a new brass gear on the drive axle…
The Aristo 2-8-2 has gears on all the drive axles, never heard about them being an issue. It most likely has the tapered axles, check for loose drivers and back to back gauge.
Just thought I’d mention it. Never owned one so I dunno…
Most likely has tapered axles??? Um… yes! they all do.
I’d check for overly thick flanges and back to back measurements that are way off.
At least those were some of the problems I had on my Pacific…
