We're back - Report errors

Not QUITE where I had hoped to be, but we’re live, and with a new forum module to boot. Ive tried to test every corner of the site, but undoubtedly I have missed something. If you get an error, report it here. I will look into it.

First off, the main landing page is slow for some reason. It takes 5-10 seconds to load. Looking in to that. Every other page loads fine, so Im not sure whats going on here.

A few new things. First, you’re going to want to visit the menu on the top of the page (the one with Updates/My Profile/Messages/Settings/Sign out) Click Settings, then Notifications and uncheck a bunch of the boxes there. Otherwise, you’ll get a crapload of emails everytime someone does something in a thread you have participanted in, sneezes on your profile page, or views just about anything else youve done on the site. Its annoying, sorry.

Second, the updated forums added and removed some things. The most blatant removal is the main forum page now doesnt have a handy way to see if there is new content in the forum. BUT, its added a “view newest posts” link next to the forum name, and youll view all new content.

“Mark All as Read” was VERY buggy in the update, so Ive removed it for now. Ill bring it back as soon as I can fix it correctly. (It has a giant n+1 problem for those software guys out there)

You can ‘thank’ someone for a post, and add and subtract what’s called ‘reputation’. This is a relatively new idea in forum software, and its finally made it to the package I use here at LSC. People earn (or lose) reputation based on what other people think of what they post. This is another tool to let you choose whose posts to read on the forum. Look for the ratio of good/bad reputation when viewing the forum.

Lots of style changes, too. Some Im not wild about, and Ill be tweaking them as I go.

Enjoy!

Nice one Bob… Thank you.

I’ll take it for a test flight!

Thanks Bob. At least it’s back and running.

Bob,
Thanks for getting us up and running so quickly. One thing I am noticing is on my phone at least form posts are cut off and I can not scroll over. Could be me I don’t use my phone much but thought I would mention it

it sounds like you’ve had a very busy night and morning. Thank you so much for that. LSC is a trmendous asset to the garden railroad hobby which would leave behind a ginormous void if it vanished.

Thank you very much Bob for re-instating the web site so quickly, Thanks, indeed, for what must have been a lot of effort and hassle. I like the look of it by the way.

Amazing that you could turn this around so quickly, and get some sleep too! Great work - and Thank You for your efforts.

Yep, phone and iPad/Tablet support is, er, odd right now. Things dont QUITE fit on the screen.

Hicup - Pressing POST a second time before the page refreshes will double post.

Thanks Bob, I allso have right hand side of post cut off.

One bug I found is with that “User dashboard” thing. It showed a bunch of code when I clicked on it.

I just wanted to see what it was.

Never mind, it looks to be working now.

Thank you Robert, excellant job!

Whew! I followed your instructions to change settings, did that, but it wouldn’t let me out! Now I know I get impatient, but after say 10 seconds I’ll hit another key trying to speed it up…

Anyway I closed the connection and went back to firefox and tried to re enter Got a Fatal error, my port was open (I think). Closed that and shut off laptop (Win8.1). Waited 10 seconds and restarted, came back on and I could only get on with Chrome, but only having seen big dots for a pass word for so long, I couldn’t post…closed that.

Finally ran a diagnostic and then used ‘Help connect to a site’ to open the site…

Not complaining, merely reporting. Some slowness is on my end; old and poorly supported phone lines for dsl.

A great big THANK YOU for giving this bunch another go. There are too many friends that would suddenly be lost, like our dear Boomer, (hoping he’ll return).

I too would like to express my humble appreciation, not just for last night, but for all the time, work, and assumably agravation that must you must experience doing this. It is so easy to overlook actually posting thanks, regardless how often we might think it.

Fits great on my 17" laptop, but I know as soon as we go ‘mobile’ (compatible) the page will get skinny and wasted margines will grow. I see that everywhere.

My speed here seems to be improving.

Are we getting the Active Topics back? They be mia.

Thanks for ALL you do.

John

Ok, I set Firefox to display at 90% and now I can read the whole post, even that last few characters on the right hand side. Now if only I could get spell checker to work in here I will bee oh kay.

Bob, just above the “Post Reply” button is a box that perpetually wants to be checked on for notification when someone responds to a thread. Clicking it off does no good. I did as you asked in Settings: Notifications. Everytime, it seems, that the page refreshes, I get a red box update notification. Waahhh!

Steve, go back to the setting page, save the setting with the boxes unchecked, and then once its save, log out. Then log back in and see if it works better.

Doesn’t seem to have affected it. Will try again.
