Well , perhaps I am not so thick after all

Timmy,

Being the old fashioned type I still believe in having separate drives for OS, APPS and DATA. Seems to work quite well.

Hans ,
You will be appalled to know that I do not trust computers one bit , so all my valuable photos are quickly put on disc . This leaves my computer fairly unstuffed , thus it works like lightning , far too fast for me .
Martyn ( my son ) and I mainly use the thing for research , one of the real blessings of a pooter. The ability to get photo data of the Trains , Tanks , Trucks and so forth that we model avidly .
As you have gathered , with Timmy’s help , we ( he ) found a major problem with the thing , and it was serviced by an expert who was rather puzzled at its content , he asked what we use it for . His apparently are so data stuffed they are noticeably slower–except for his laptops .
That’s the nice thing about this site , you can have these little friendly chats with others who are inclined to be more sympathetic and show interest in what you’re doing .
Mike

Hans ,
I just thought of something that I hand over . My ADSL connection , though in fairness it doesn’t actually literally carry over ,but that’s the only bit , I even start afresh with "favourites " .
I now have three computers , one exclusively used for viewing and editing . I wait until I have about 100 pics , then download (upload ?) them to Data Discs , the shiny silver beer mat type .You may say " expensive way to go "
but , at approx 1 dollar per 100 pics , it ain’t bad , and access to a particular pic is very rapid . Or , put it another way , I do not get carried away looking at photos , forgetting what I was looking for in the first place .
I bet you do the same with your machines–a quick clean turns into a stripping session . You didn’t intend to , but
there is always one spot on a lathe or saw or whatever , where you cannot quite pick up the debris , and lo!!! you finish up with the machine in bits , then reassembled glowing with cleanliness . I don’t doubt a lot of us do that .
In fact , everybody , where is your favourite place to " get lost " Under the seats in the car ? At the bottom of an old toolbox that you meant to chuck , but didn’t just in case ? We need to know .

Yup…that’s a good solution however, not necessary any more (unless you are running servers) with the speed and size of new hard drives and the low cost these days. All 8 of my machines have at least 2 drivers. All data is not only backed up to each machine in case of failure, it is also backed up to the second drive. Odds are good that both drivers will not fail at the same time. I also backup to removable media (Dual Layer DVD), and store the backup offsite. It makes no sense to back up and keep everything in one place especially if you have a fire.

Mike...

Unless your hard drive size is that of a pea, it actually is faster, less work and more efficiant to keep your pictures on the drive itself. The access time is much faster than reading from disk. You can also create subfolders with friendly names and dates to sort all of your images (which can also be done on a disk). Backing them up to a disk is a good idea if you want to preserve them, just like backing up any of your “data” that cannot be replaced.

Whether you are running out of room on your drive (remember you want a minimum of 10% free space) it would be good practice to DEFRAG your machine on a regular basis. Just like a oil change is the single most import maintenance for your car to keep it running at it’s best, Defragging the computer is just the same. I guarentee if you have never done it or not done it frequently you will notice a huge difference when completed. Check out PREVIOUS TIPS / DEFRAGMENTATION from my website http://dehancomputerservices.com

Yes ,Timmy , I accept what you say , but when my machines have gone down in the past , I have lost photos .
The defrag thing is important as you say , it is interesting to see the speed up on a computer when it’s done .
Mike M
ps . I thought I had , but just went and checked to make sure . This "pirated " copy I am using has “Disc Keeper”
in , and is set to defragment on a daily basis ,using "set and forget " Since this pirate was taken on board , I seem to have had no silly niggles --except the drip , drip reminder every so often that I have been the victim of counterfeiting .Everyone should be so lucky .

Yup... crashes, viruses etc can and do cause the loss or corruption of files. I am not saying to just store your pictures on disks, I am saying backup your data that you cannot replace. And, accessing your picture files is faster from the hard drive as opposed to a disk.

Removed previous reference to Plated copy

OOOPs , what was I thinking of , I meant a Plated copy . Slip of the tongue .
Mike

I take your word for it over the access to photos in hard drive , I never now let enough store in there to bother .
It’s all down to lack of confidence , I know how to make files up of several pictures , and have done so to try to get them onto the 'net . As you say , it’s very fast --I had assumed it was because there were not many there ,
but ,yes , I can see your point . I suppose , given my computing capacity , I could afford the room on one just for storing photos --I think I may give that a go ,see how I get on . Thanks , I shall let you know how I get on . Which one would you go for , the "slowest " ? I have this one , 2xhdd’s , very fast ,;another ,1x hdd , not quite so fast–a year or so older than this one . Then there’s the 4 year old one , you can actually see it working ,but happily works away in the corner doing very little . Perhaps it needs an upgrade .

What size are the hard drives and how much free space do you have on each?

Timmy .
This one ;XP Prof 2002SP2,Pentium® 4CPU 3.06GHz 3.07GHz, 1Gbof RAM,
C 92GB , 83.2 free . D 90.2,90.1 free .
The other fast one similar --it is away being tuned up , and has only one HDD , C .

The slow one Windows xp ,2002 SP 2 ,not internet connected but could be ,so not got windows updates .
Loc Disc C -12.8 , 7.12 free
D Sav ,5.79 . 5.09 free .
Luckily , we have caught the computers at a time of clean up and changeover .So I will delay any changes until you come back .

The first one you list has more then plenty of room left on the C Drive and is completely free on the D Drive.

OK , Timmy , I suppose if the two main ones are connected and the other stays as stand alone ,it will give me all the play room I need .
Thanks , nice to talk to someone who knows a bit ;<)

Timmy, Perhaps Mike uses the D drive for video editing

Just kidding, just kidding! But I’m sure he won’t need an upgrade any time soon, at least as far as space is concerned.

yeah…what he said… video editing

Hans , Timmy ,
Funny you should say that .

Mike,

Isn’t that what you call intuition?
BTW to make that HDD more useable for video editing, divide it into two virtual drives.

Makes things a lot “easier” (aka faster, cleaner, more responsive etc. etc.).  And it really helps if it’s a SATA drive.

Rather irritating .It has happened before , you may recall .
