Weathering the underside of stock/box/etc. cars

I would like to weather the underside of my cars, like box cars for example. (Some of mine run on a high road and you can see the underside, plus I just wanna do this.) I tried one and I guess it looks okay.

Does anyone have any ideas for what the underside of a box car should look like? Pictures of real ones? I couldn’t find any pictures of real ones, which is surprising considering everything on earth is on the internet. I guess it would be kind of tough to turn a real box car upside down and take pictures of it!

Interesting.

I suppose that a light to moderate coat of Rustoleum Camo Khaki would do the trick.

Turn the car over, remove the trucks, and spray from each side, heavier towards the middle of the car where the wheels would throw the dirt, making sure that some of the car’s color shows through. Remember that less is often more. Build it up slowly until you are satisfied. You could use a very light overspray of “Earth Brown” to bring out highlights.

Try reversing the colors to see how that works.

Pics, we want pics.

I “googled” ‘Box Car Derailment’ and other variations and found a few good shots…

Good thinking.....I see it isn't so difficult to turn a real box car over and take pictures of it after all!

I’ll post some pictures as soon as I have my hosting set up.

Welcome John. You don't need to wait to get hosting. Bob includes 10Mb free with your sign-up. Just click the MyFiles link in the post editor; browse your local PC for a photo then hit Upload. Once it's in the Free Freightshed just click the filename and the photo URL will show up in the post editor.

Welcome John

Well here goes nothing…I’m going to try to follow Jon Radder’s instructions…

This is a little practice exercise, about twenty minutes, on a Bachmann wooden box car underside. The last picture is just a little weathering goofing around on one-half the side of the car.
