Water tank build

With the station done it’s time to get a water supply for the RR. First mill up some cedar for the timber frame, tank staves, and some angled bits for the roof.

And a plywood form for the tank.

Next, starting to glue the staves to the tank form. Gluing them on 15 at a time, with a couple of strapping clamps

Also built the 8 sided roof.

More to come as time allows.

looks like a nice start, Randy…

Looks great Randy. Reminds me that I have a nice Pola tank in the basement that needs to get planted at Pine Summit.

Cedar shingles for the roof ?
Ralph

Randy, Looks like you are figuring out all the hard parts for my oversize working water tank. Are you beveling the sides of the staves? If so how’d you do it? I’m following this closely.

He said he was going to use bead and cove for the staves.....

Looking good Randy. While you are at it make one more and send it to Jersey.

Nice start

L O L !!!!!!

@ Dave, no bevels, the staves are only 3/32" thick and by taping 15 or so together and then applying them to the tank form they pull pretty tight together. Good enough for me. @ Steve, don’t have a 3/32" bead & cove bit set. So a little more progress today. Working on the timber frame, 2 more bents to add to the interior and finish the cross bracing.

Sorry about the pic quality, clouds moved in and the lighting ain’t great right now.

Looking Good Randy! Looking forward to seeing the finished result!

Great work, Randy… It will compliment that station well…

Looks great Randy. So much for the no more shingles attitude    What do you plan on using for the bands ?

Thanks guys. Yeh I ‘caved’ on the no more shingles attitude. Not sure what to use for the bands, I do have a roll of 16 or 18 guage brass wire. Would that be suitable?

How big around is it? I replaced the round metal bands on my to “Piko” Durango water tanks with wider plastic bands. If you want them, I’ll send them to you. You’ll need to supply the nuts and bolts for them since I had to cut them off.

The metal bands I took off are 9 1/2" across.

Hmmm… Ive got one of those too. That’s an interesting idea. Now I have to go look at pictures of tanks.

@Randy - The tank is looking really good. Love the shingle work. Are you buying them or splitting your own?

@ Ken, thanks for the offer, but after some experimenting with different quages of wire and then with some .125 wide Evergreen styrene that I had in stock, I like the look of the plastic as well. What size did you use? I am thinking maybe 0.020 X 0.125.

@ Jon, I am sawing my own, as always. For the station I simply ripped strips of cedar at about 3/32" thick and then X-cut 8 or 10 at a time to the desired length.
With this roof I decided to try taper sawn shingles. Alot more work though. Cross-cut short pieces of your cedar board then saw the little blocks into individual shingles one at a time. Using the miter guage set at about 2 degrees away from the blade and a stop block to get consistent shingle thickness.

Roof is almost done, the timber frame is done.

I used the .125"x .040" thick since that’s what I had on hand.

Alittle more progress today.
