Did some tweaks to the Shay over the Holiday weekend.
Made a tiny drain hole in the 90 degree exhaust line fitting in the smoke box to let the condensation run out onto the track rather than spew all over the loco and surroundings when clearing the cylinders.
I moved the pressure gauge so its visible from the opposite side as I do most of the operating from the right side of the loco. The gas line was also tweaked a bit as the jet was not sitting straight in the holder.
Also plumbed a line from the clack valve on the back head, used to be used by the hand pump, back into the tender. Using a large syringe I was able to refill the boiler under steam and make some nice long runs. So my previous question has been answered. I need to bend the line a bit to allow for better access to the Johnson Bar without getting burnt.
I get some blow by on the steam valve. Tried some silicone gel on the shaft and O ring and it eliminated much of it. Is this common as a result of a sloppy fit? The O ring does not look worn or damaged but perhaps I can locate one just a hair larger to seal better.
I could use pics of the business end of the spray bottles being used to refill thru the goodall type valves. I was unable to locate one at Home Despot even tho a post on MLS directed steamers there for a purty silver spray bottle. I have yet to locate a spray bottle capable of accepting a hose. I’d like to see what mods are done to the nozzle area to accomodate the hose. TAC can you email me any pics of what you use?
I found some small cans (8 oz) of propane at Walmart the other day. Uses a screw on valve of the type I saw on a UK website a bit ago. Anyone know if they are available in the USA?
