Warning , possible hacking

I have received some very odd emails purporting to be from my good friend Ric Golding .

My suspicions were roused when they both arrived at the same time from New Zealand and Denmark ; I recognised one name on the addressees , but it was not anyone on this site .

My computer is still ok , and I have tried to warn Ric via a PM , but in view of his absence from here today , I think his machine is compromised .

I have no idea how to reach him now , but perhaps someone here knows his other addresses or telephone number because I think he’ll need to know .

Mike

I got them too. He might have a virus. There’s no harm if you do not click on the link in the email.

OK Jon . Thanks .

Mike

I got one as well. I never open emails when the subject is odd looking or has a link.

You would think this would be common sense, but I cant tell you how many times I have to help someone clean up their machine after they opened, then clicked on links in an email “because I couldnt tell what it was”.

I have friends who send me links. I double and triple check the “From” address to make sure its really from them. And I read the body of the email to make sure there isn’t anything suspicious. Even then, sometimes I don’t open the links, just for fear that they might not be genuine.

On my last computer, the main drive was labeled K instead of C. I do not know why. But that actually saved me once, because the virus went to install at c/windows/system, and the computer threw up a warning that c/windows/system was an invalid path.

Not anything from Ric, but been getting odd stuff (almost all into my spam folder) all weekend long and I had to reboot my modem, somethings been going on worldwide since Saturday, dam Ruskies.

I got it from Ric, too… We talked about it this morning… He knows about it, because, he got one too…

I got it and it said it was from me. I didn’t open it.

Rick, you don’t open emails from yourself? Gee, that how I remind myself to do things, I send myself an email. Then, when its done, I send me an email to let me know its done.

Ric , I’m happy to see you’ve not been hacked .

Mike

It sure sounds like he HAS been hacked.

Guys, having my confuser checked out. But I don’t use the formal name on any confuser. I’d not open anything from Richard W. Golding just to be safe. I certainly wouldn’t. I apologize if it is my system and I’ve caused a problem.

The cute young thing on the internet said of conversation was just between us. I guess you can’t trust anyone.

Gee, I feel unloved. I didn’t get anything.

Ric,

The computer problems are like the road problems; 90% the driver (comp user), 5% the vehicle (again the comp user e.g. lack of maintenance.) and 5% the road (in this case the Super Cyber Highway).

Ducks and heads back to paint tunnel portals.

Likely, it isn’t Ric that got the virus, but somebody that knows Ric.

Well whatever is going on it ain’t over, I had to reload my modem connection again today.

Amen. As a former user configuration tester for customer service at Apple, I can vouch for it being 90-95% user error.
