Warning; family outing

OK I’m giving everybody; a head’s up, a chance to scoot, a fair warning: My family is taking me out in public again. 16 of my family (1.5 no shows, the .5 is separated) and I will be on the Cumbres and Toltec this July 22. Mostly we get along if we’re fawning over the young. My older brother and me? Why as smooth as oil and water, there’s a bit of arrogance in us and we spar. You’ve been warned and I promised Sis to ‘behave’ * … * def; Don’t hit your brother.

Any way we be celebrating my making 65! There was legitimate doubt 3 years ago. We are doing the out and back from Chama and spending 2 nights at a hunting lodge! I was offered a 3rd trip on the Silverton, but suggested this bucket list item instead.

I apologize if this puts anybody in an inconvenient spot, but you have 3 weeks to make other plans, our Juggernaut is in motion and deposits paid.

When all else fails these little words usually carry me through: Mongo just pawn in game of life.

Any tips on getting a cab ride?

I’ll be in the general vicinity (Denver area) about a month later. Hopefully the state will have recovered from your visit. Have fun!

Correction; you best avoid the Chama end; Sunday the 19th, not the 22 as the fool had earlier proclaimed.

Ah love the smell of coal smoke in the morning…

Fortunately, just as Ma Nature abhors a straight line, the Cumbres and Toltec has few tangents. A decent composition is possible from the near last car. The grade here about 1.4%.

Approaching Windy Point

20 minutes before we were down on the track visible to the right, that’s a 4% grade.

Mission Accomplished;

My Grand nephew eagerly accepted my Train Gene!

We rode out and back to spare the wee ones the bus ride. Here is our train continuing it’s journey, while we ride the train from Antonito back to Chama.

Everybody had a great time! -I didn’t take my brother’s bait and kept my promise to Sis-

Even non train family members admitted it was a great day!

I encourage every one to take this trip.

Great pictures John,

I just know you had a wonderful time.

We spent 3 days at Chama, June of 14, and had a ball riding and chasing the trains.

One of our greatest memories was having a picnic lunch at the station in Cumbres Pass

after all the trains had departed, beautiful and so peaceful and quiet.
