Large Scale Central

Wanted Mikado drive unit.

I am working on two kitbash projects for a public display that runs three times a year. I have two older Aristocraft Pacifics that I would like to convert to Mountain Class engine. Both are older engines with the plastic siderods. Looking for the drive units and side rods or the parts and pieces that can assemble the drives.

If you would like to see the display where I plan to run the engines please see Youtube. Type in “Evansville G scale” there will be two video of the display during the county fair. Type in “SIAM train 2014” and there is a video of the Christmas display.

Thank you

Don’t you really need two of the newer type Pacific’s ?

Donald,

Paul is correctly suggesting that Mountain type 4-8-2 engines typically had 73" drivers or so (road specific)… Which is pretty much what Aristocrat provides with the three axle Pacific drives. While Mikado’s had smaller diameter drivers; say 55-63". Aristocraft’s Mik drive is correctly offered with said smaller drivers.

Michael

And don’t forget that there were ‘Light’ Mountain Locos and ‘Heavy’ Mountain Locos with driver sizes from 66’ to 80" depending on the road, the need and the intended use. Some lines even changed their needs over time and had different classes.

Donald stated that he has two older Aristocraft Pacifics that he wants to use for this so maybe his title is misleading in that he wants to end up with an 8 coupled drive unit as opposed to the 6 coupled drive unit of the pacific and mikado drive was the best example he could think of.

Welcome aboard Donald and I hope you have great success with this build. I for one will be interested in seeing the build progress if you don’t mind taking and sharing pics of your progress(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

What a welcome for a new member

Thank you Paul, Michael and David,

it would appear there is no easy modification. I did do further investigations on your suggestions and along with the an article in December Garden Railways I am looking at kitbashing.

Other than Ebay, where might I be able to get a damaged Aristocraft Pacific for the driver. Also where might I locate two sets of metal drive rods and connection rods?

Thank you

Donald

Donald,

I recently completed a northern from two of the newer Aristo Pacific’s. 4-8-4 instead of 4-8-2, but similiar.
