Hi Steve. I don’t know about the Bachmann kits but something very similar to them is the Buddy L line. They make a boxcar, flat, gondola and caboose. They come in black, assembled, with metal wheels and limited graphics. There has been a bunch of them on Ebay lately and on some occasions no one has bid which means you could have a brand new car with metal wheels delivered for under $20. If you bought a few you could probably combine the shipping and get them for less. Check them out when you get a chance.
Todd: how does the scale of the Buddy L’s compare to the bachmann ones. I have seen one a few years ago and the looks like they are larger that the bachmann ones.
Dan S.
They 2 are outdoors right now in the dark and rain but I am 99% sure that the dimensions are the same.
I can check on that 1% tomorrow.
Checking Ebay the Buddy L’s seem to be going for $10 with a $12 shipping, Not bad for what I call a sacrificial car that sits outside 24/7/365
I was redoing my Bachmann flat cars, and I had a Buddy L in the group. It looks to me that the Buddy L cars “borrowed” the Bachmann molds. Except the decking on the Buddy L flat car is different, making the Buddy L flat car a bit thicker in profile. My Buddy L high side gondolas appear to be identical to the Bachmann high side gondola I have.
Thanks to all for the Heads Up on Buddy L. I will check them out.
Steve
I’ve got four or five Bachmann freight car kits, new in box, still sealed in the original plastic bags. I’ll check tomorrow morning to see which ones they are – I’ve sold a couple and am not sure which ones remain.
I have a tank car kit but it is in MD and I am in FL. Email me in June if you want me to dig it out of the cupboard.
I’ve got three: 98902 – wooden reefer; 98903 – wooden box car; 98903 – wooden box car. Still in boxes, still in unopened plastic bags. I’ll sell them for $35 each (or $100 for all three) plus shipping from California.
