Looking for some RS-3 stanchions. Anyone have any in your junk box and willing to part with them? I need 4-6 of each side.
Thanks
Dennis

Dennis,
I seam to remember that someone was making a reproduction part for these, but I do not remember who. hopefully someone else will remember. they are not something apt to be in the spare parts bin due to breakage. what someone really needs it to make these out of brass for long term durability.

Thanks Al,
I found the ones make by GLX but they are $19 + $10 shipping. I can’t justify that cost on a bashed loco.
Dennis
Mark Dashnaw, here on LSC, makes them

Thanks David,
I sent Mark a PM. Fingers crossed.

Dennis, tell us about the bash please!

Greg,
I am building a freelance model of an RS-3 slug. Similar to the following.
I’ll post progress pics later today.
Dennis
A few progress shots.
Way cool, please show progress in a thread, what a neat idea.

For an old steam guy… What is a slug? It looks like an Un powered unit that has lots of weight, and traction trucks powered from another engine?

Eric … I’ll give it a shot …It’s an engine without the cab (no crew) that is usually connected to and another engine, hence you have twice the power with one crew. I think now they have some that are remotely controlled from the ground ( small control box ) and could even be controlled from a tower. The engineer walks around and uncouples/ switches etc.
Yard slugs.
How did I do?
Those Stanchions from GLX can be a bargain, if you send the money in Canadian funds, available at most American banks…or a postal money order in Canadian funds. Currently the Canadian Dollar is floating around 75 cents US… I’m sure that Gilbert will appreciate the Canadian funds…and not fight you…

Many slugs do not have a diesel engine (prime mover), like B units do. So a slug is a lot of weight and 2 powered trucks. It draws its power from the locomotive its connected to. Where as a calf (as in cow and calf) does have a prime mover, it just doesn’t have a cab, kind of like the old B units, and its controlled from the locomotive its connected to, but does not draw power from that locomotive.
I believe that there are no slugs with an engine on board. A slug has it’s own power trucks with the electric motors still intact. They are weighted, usually, with cement to maintain their tractive power. They are electrically cable connected and coupled to a mother locomotive that can provide the necessary electric current to power the trucks, in essence giving the single mother loco extra drive power.
Then there are B units or self powered units with out a cab. Then I would call them dedicated A B unit sets that are referred to as Cow and calf.(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
Dave, I know that having or not having the prime mover is the difference between a slug and a calf. But I said that “Many slugs don’t have” the prime mover, because as soon as I say none of them do, someone will find a picture of one that does.
