After close inspection it doesn’t appear that the roof of the LGB mogul comes off like the roofs of the Bachmann logging locos. Looks like I just need to cover up the loco and paint the roof in place?
There are two screws in the front by the top of two outside windshields and one at the top rear of the cab that secure the roof on an LGB Mogul.

Just wait until you run into one with one screw in the front you cannot get to because of the steam dome and two in the back…
I have one of each.
Is that waht one refers to as “German Engineering”?

This one screw in front roof attachment configuration only occured on the First Version of the 2018D Mogul. It was changed sometime during the production period of the 2018D to the two screws in front and one in rear probably for the reason you pointed out. And has remained the same since.
I hadn’t noticed the screws either and was glad to find two at the back because it has to be disassembled soon for painting.
If you have two screws in the rear of the cab for the roof, this must be another change that was incorporated on the newer LGB Moguls.
