Large Scale Central

Want to be a part of History ? Grand Central Station

OK Guys, I met a couple of weeks ago with the MTA and Amtrak at the Hyde Park RR Station in

NY about there 100th anniversary Grand Central Station event they have planned for this year.

On May 11th and12th they are bringing in a lot of Private Rail cars for display and they want to host there 1st annual Model Train show which will be a yearly event from here on out.

They asked me to do a Largescale display for them for the weekend but I’m too committed to other projects already to commit to it, So if you or your club are interested in displaying in a 16 by 40 spot, PM me and I will give you the contact info to get started. This Is a cool opportunity to promote Largescale trains and your club if your within the Tri state area.

My Email from Sarah.

Hello Nick,

Thank you so very much for coming over to meet us yesterday, and for your generous support of our event and general sharing of expertise.

I’ve already emailed and rec’d an (extremely brief) reply from Ron’s B…ks – hoping that goes somewhere soon – but I would love to follow up with you directly to revisit a few of these recommendations, and particularly to see if we can help make a model train display in Vanderbilt Hall a reality (your display/creation).

In any event, please don’t hesitate to reach out – today/tomorrow/over weekend/anytime.

We have a lot to do and not much time, I think we’ve already made decent progress overnight (if I do say so myself J) but the list is long. Happy to work around your schedule and availability, want to be respectful of your time and livelihood as well.

Thank you in advance, looking forward to hearing back from you,

Sarah (on behalf of the GCT team)

Oh, you mean Grand Central Terminal. For a moment there, I was cornfused.

Interesting… so while it is properly called “Terminal”, many people call it “Station”…

Wikipedia: Although the terminal has been properly called “Grand Central Terminal” since 1913, many people continue to refer to it as “Grand Central Station,” the name of the previous rail station on the same site, and of the U.S. Post Office station next door, which is not part of the terminal. It is also sometimes used to refer to the Grand Central – 42nd Street subway station, which serves the terminal.

So is the post office on the site of grand central station?

I guess it does not matter to most new yorkers, they seem to be using both terms interchangeably for the place where the trains are according

Grand Central Terminal (GCT)—colloquially called Grand Central Station

“Grand Central Terminal (often called Grand Central Station even by natives, though that is technically the name of the subway station beneath the terminal)”

“Commonly referred to as ‘Grand Central Station,’ the historic Grand Central Terminal is a famous NYC landmark in Midtown Manhattan”

Seems that us out-of-towners are more technically accurate than the people of New York…

My bad “Terminal” We know it as Station…

Sorry, I got beat up by a New Yorker once for the mistake. I just thought I pass on the fun.

Have not heard to many good things about participating. Later RJD

There was an interview with Sam Roberts who has a new book out on Grand Central Terminal (native new yorka here) on Science Friday last Friday - http://sciencefriday.com/segment/03/22/2013/grand-central-an-engine-of-scientific-innovation.html
