Wanna buy a locomotive?

I saw this amusing and interesting article on an automotive website:

https://www.thedrive.com/news/28065/why-buy-a-supercar-when-you-can-buy-a-5700-hp-steam-locomotive-for-375000

I saw this earlier on another web site and did one of those “spit-takes”. If you think that it’s expensive to keep a Lambo running, just imagine this engine. There is also that tiny detail regarding having some track to actually run it on. But hey, there ain’t no substitute of horsepower!

It seems that B&LE 643 has had a rough life in the past 15 + years. Apparently it was restored but never run, and has been left to rot out in the elements. The owner has not accepted offers from well known museums to rescue the loco. The owner of the property wants the loco gone. There is a very real possibility that this loco will be scrapped. I don’t think a 2-10-4 will fit on many roads …

As good as new?

Lets hope she isn’t scrapped. But yea, a 2-10-4 is a bit large for most tourist railroads.

Still available on eBay, tagged “for local pickup only”:

Honestly the way I see it the price is not the option but the storage is !

I personally think it would be an excellent investment for the grandchildren or great grandchildren. You cannot find that kind of work andhands on skill these days. Think if there was a Barret Jackson for steam locos 20 yrs from now ? Really should be saved !

Buy it for the grand kids Pete !!!

Well thats a deal breaker. I was willing to pull the trigger if they would have Fedex’ed it.

If it fits it ships. . .lol.

I am having way to good of a time with this thread. I am trying to convince the wife a caboose in the backyard would be a good thing. Not sure she would be very happy with me if the Postman left us a package pick up notice for 2-10-4 locomotive.

Too bad it’s not on Amazon – I could get it with free two-day shipping!

That was a good read. I don’t want a caboose anymore.

Why not? Maybe you could just build a replica caboose like some others have done. I am sure you can get the plans for a nice wooden bobber caboose, and the its just material and time.

Oh would that be a sight. A locomotive that size, hanging under a drone, zooming through the air, being delivered to your doorstep.

We own a few acres of undeveloped property somewhere in the desert near the Butterfield Ranch, and I always thought it would be awesome to put a caboose on the property and fix it up to use as a weekend cabin. Of course, first we’d have to find out exactly where our property is, and then we’d have to get access to it, permits, maybe a well and power lines, etc. And we’d only rarely have the opportunity to use it, meanwhile there’s the risk that it would just end up being a target for vandals when unattended. So it’s not likely to ever happen…too much money, time, and trouble. But it’s nice to dream about.
