Large Scale Central

WAINWRIGHT MINING DISTRICT

Hi all,
Here is the finish up on the engine shed. The shed is finished and set in place to check for fit and alignment to the table.

A track side view.

All finished and everything in place and working fine.

Another track side view.

That’s about it for the mining district. There will, of course, always be plants and details to add as well as figures and signs. I’m finishing up detailing some side dump ore cars and will post them when done. Thanks for taking a look.
Rick

Wonderful modeling, Rick. Did you make the corrugated roofing, and how did you “rust” it?

Steve

Hi Steve,

That corrugated roofing is pieces cut from the metal wrapper of an old “DoughBoy” above ground pool.
They were very popular around here years ago but you don’t see them in use much anymore. The rusting is a product of Mother Nature as the rolled up metal laid out in the weather for years before I got hold of it.

Thanks for looking
Rick

Well, that’s cool enough. You must have a lifetime supply of Large-Scale corrugated roofing material, then. Build (and post pictures of) lots more buildings, please.

Steve

I like it, especially the giant foot print beside the building…

Awesome mining area Rick!

Sasquatch lives!

Hi all,
We needed a string of side dumps for the mining loco’s to pull so we remodeled a few Bachmann cars and rebuilt a few other old cars that we had laying around now we have a pretty reasonable yard of mining cars to go with the rest of the project. Starting with a string of 4 of the new Bachmann side dump cars with the cast metal frames I bought detail kits from Gary at Sierra Valley to dress them up. These kits include the wheel sets, KD couplers, correct size chain, journal covers, and other necessary parts to make the conversion.

The new die cast frames make it more difficult to install details like the KD couplers on than the old plastic frames did. Here the frame on the left has been cut down and ground out to receive the coupler shank.

I built some Styrene slip on covers for added detail to the smooth under frames of the cars. The channel cross member with the brass pins below the coupler is the support assembly to hold the coupler to the correct height in the frame.

The string of side dumpers all painted, numbered, weathered, and ready for service in the mining district.

Here the string of cars are tied on behind the little box cab headed for the shaft house and their first revenue loads.

Well that wraps up the saga of the building of the Mining District on the Shasta Pacific outdoor railroad. I hope you have enjoyed following along, it has been a ball building it. Now on to some of the other 300 projects waiting in the wings.

It’s been a heck of a ride following along, Rick. A super project, well done in all phases!

Now that it’s done, though, you need a vacation…maybe up here in Montana where the DC&M’s construction season is about to start? Might be good for you to get away from all those blue skies for a while.

Steve

Edit: DC&M, not DE&M. Darned fingers…

Yes, it’s been great fun following along. I just looked back to see that this thread began in November 2011. A huge amount of progress in under 4 months. And it’s also kind of cool to know that a little bit of the CVSRy has found a new home in the sun on the Wainwright Mining District. Great job Rick!

Great Job. Everything looks great.

Wonderful modeling. A real inspiration. Thank you for posting it all.

Tom

Hi all,
Just a heads up.
If anyone want’s to take another look at any of the pictures in this thread
do so soon as they will be going away tomorrow evening.

Thanks for sharing in the fun.
Rick

Oh No :open_mouth:
Sure wish you wouldn’t delete the photos
If you need the space and must, please make sure you upload the finished shots to the photo gallery so we can at least see them now and again

I agree with Ralph - Why would you delete the photos and kill this great thread?

If you need free webspace for them I can supply it. You would have the edit all the posts though and re-point them.

Please don’t delete!
Like Jon says, upload them someplace else and provide the link, these are too good to loose

Rick:

I’ll fourth the above appeals to keep the photos in the thread.

Really great, unique work. It can provide information and encouragement for lots of folks and for a long time if left in place.

Thanks & Happy RRing,

Jerry

AIEE! Rick, send them to me, Ill put them up somewhere and edit the thread.

Please SAVE this thread!

Bob, It looks to me as the photos are hosted here in his freight shed. If they're kept where they are, no editing should be needed. Ralph
