Large Scale Central

Visitors, etc

Had a visit from a nice couple today from Alabama. Bill Blankley and Joy Bowden were in the San Diego area and wanted to see my layout. It was fun getting to show it to someone in the hobby. Except for Bob Treat (Snow Creek Railroad), the only other folks who’ve seen it have been family and a couple of the neighbors.

I’m hoping to get a canopy or something this summer, so there’ll be some shade on the back patio. Right now it’s not a problem but in warm weather it gets killer-hot back there, with the sunlight bouncing off the side of the house. Then maybe I could do an open house.

Been working on another plate girder bridge, this one to go at the extreme west end of the layout. Finished painting and weathering it last night, now I have to glue on the ties, then add the tie plates and rails. Once that bridge is installed I’ll be able to make a little more progress on the tracks at that end, and the next trestle.

The west end mountains are nearing completion, and I’m tickled to death by the way they look so far. I’ve made sites for some mines that will be on the mountainside, and a future Gn15" mine tram.

I’ve been a diehard fan of 35mm film, but I’m really starting to want a digital camera! I hate having to wait until I finish off an entire roll of film before I can show anyone the pics, and usually by the time I do, most of the pics are outdated already. Worse yet, I recently had some new pics that turned out poorly, now I have to shoot a whole 'nother roll. :stuck_out_tongue: Would sure be nice to get one of the cheaper digicams just so I can shoot a pic and post it the same day. That would make it a lot easier to show my progress.

Digital cameras are getting cheaper all the time. You can get a fairly good basic camera for less than $200.00. And you will save that much on film developing in just a few months. You will also be surprised how many more pictures you will take when you know you can have instant gratification and not have to pay a fortune to get them developed…

Not to mention not having to shoot a whole roll just to get one or two keepers…

I’ve always done that, even with 35mm, but now with the digital, I do it 10 fold. On vacation, I used to shoot 5 or 6 rolls of film, and get a dozen or so great shots. Now with the digital, Ill shoot 1000 photos at a time…

The nice thing about digital is, you can shoot as much as you want, save the good pics and delete the rest, all without wasting anything.

The other thing about digital is that if you use PICASA , a free download , you can process a lot of your errors out and thus save even more film ,so to speak .
The Picasa programme is also very useful for highlighting detail in a photo , cutting it out , enlarging it , and you then have a second shot of a detail you may want for modelling . And so on .
Yes , vote for digital .
I have several 35mm cameras gathering dust , fortunately , some of the lenses can be adapted to my digital cameras .

Ray,

It took me a while to switch to digital, I wanted a Digi-SLR and that’s what I finally bought - Canon Digital Rebel. But first the price had to come down to my “pain level”.

I bought my equal half a “point and shoot” with nifty features - Panasonic DMC-TZ1. Perfect for taking along anywhere and the “BIG DEAL” is the 10x zoom. Just in case we come across a bear on our walks, getting a zoomed in shot at a safe distance will be appreciated.
Of course since I bought it - last summer - the price has come down, what else is new?!? But it is a very nice piece of equipment.

Good grief. There’s even a digital camera in the toy section at Wal*Mart.

Yeah, and in their electronic section they also have a +/- $60 one that they don't tell you (until you get it home and cut open the package) needs a $50 memory card to take more than 2 pix! It also takes kinda fuzzy pix -- unless you brace it against something due to an extremely slow "shutter" speed..... Better off to save up your money and buy a decent one the first time!

My experience here is that they all need the $50 memory card to take more than 2 pictures.

Memory cards have come down to $50? Cool.

1 gigabyte SD cards can be found for $19…

That floored me. I guess I’m behind the times. I was in Wally World tonight and they had them for $19.95. When I bought my camera…way back when…my 128 meg card cost about $75.

I bought my 2 megapixel Nikon camera, on sale, four years ago just before the grandtwins were born. Perfect excuse to give to She Who :) It came with an 8MB CompactFlash card; I promptly bought a 64 MB card for a considerable sum -- rather more than a 1gig card costs now. No plans to buy a new camera; the little Nikon works well enough for what I need, but you can get many more megapixels now for what I paid then.

I'll have to brave WalleyWorld :(

For some reason, I have an averson to that place, even though I love the prices. I guess I don’t like supporting COSCO.

But, for this, I’ll make an exception…
