Large Scale Central

Visiting motive power

We ran over to the coast today and visited Dick & Helen Smith and the beautiful Port Orford Coast RR.

Since my railroad, the Shasta Pacific, was dismantled last summer and everything stored I haven’t been able to run anything

so I took an engine along on the off chance that I would be allowed to run a 1:20 engine on his 1:24 railroad. No problem, my bashed 3 trucker was

allowed to push a few log cars in from the woods to the Old Mill plant.

We had very limited time to play because we made the round trip in one day. We had a great visit with friends and a very good

lunch in town and had to leave way to soon.

Thank you Dick and Helen for your great hospitality.

A couple of pictures, hopefully.

Rick

Yea, I’d like to get back out there again myself. Always enjoy running on Richard’s layout…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

1:24 ----- 1:20 ?? Who cares your great looking shay looks right at home there.

Great photo’s. Richard Smith got us started on making up building like his. Like the walk along layout he has. His layout is fantastic. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Hey I didn’t realize this string was here. Enjoyed your visit here Rick and Pat.

The railroad is actually scaled out at 1:22 btw as it better accomodates 1:20 equipment and still works for 1:24 as well. Hmmmm! I’m sounding a lot like LGB; “suitable for G gauge”. heehee!!

Hope you can make it out here again too Ken and maybe bring Bruce or some of those other fine eastern dudes with you. Thanks for the kind words Noel.

I’ve always wanted to get out that way to see you Richard, but my hopes of a family visit excuse were dashed when my oldest moved from Portland to Raleigh a year ago. Looks like the furthest West I’ll get for a long while will be Denver :frowning:

No excuse needed. Just load up the family in the station wagon and say you’re all going to Wally World! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Great looking pictures Rick. I’m glad you had fun with Richard. BTW I read that you disassembled your railroad last summer. Are you moving out of Redding, Calif?

Hi Chuck,

Yea, we pulled up stakes last Spring and moved to a little town outside Grants Pass, Oregon.

Not quite as pretty and green as your area but not quite as cold in the winter either(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-money-mouth.gif)

Are you going to get that new line finished before snow fly?

That makes it even easier, since Grant’s Pass is on the way to Richard’s from Medford. You could hitch a ride…or I could hitch a ride…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

If ya need a house built, I know a guy does a great job.

Any plans on resurrecting the Shasta Pacific?

That’s great Rick, that just puts you a little closer to me and I don’t have to visit California. Did you guys buy property again or did you down size? I hope you’re going to put the layout back up so we can come visit. Chris and I are thinking about down sizing but I have a little work around the house before we can do that. Chris just retired in June at the end of the school year. She’s laughing now because all the younger teachers are back at work and she’s out having coffee with all her retired teacher friends.

Actually the inner loop was up and running before our clubs July meeting at our house. It’s kind of nice because with the double crossover I can run a train going from the outside loop to the inside loop and just let it run. There’s a thread in the Track Section if you want to check it out.

Still waiting on that peach pie you owe me Mr. Smith!

Good stuff guys.

Hi Ken,

Don’t need a house built but we have spent the last 5 months gutting and remodeling the inside of this one and have started on the outside now. Yes, Merlin, just outside Grants Pass is on the way to Port Orford from Medford, sort ofJ. So anytime you are in the area let us know.

Oh yes, the Shasta Pacific, South Fork Timber Co., will be rebuilt. In fact in my spare time I have been doing a little pruning, grading, and plotting for the new lines.

Thanks for the interest.

Rick

Hi Chuck,

Yes the fact that you/we don’t have to visit California anymore is a big factor and this from a fourth generation native. Nough said!

We did downsize to a one acre lot with house and shop building. A smaller house which is working out great after the remodel but trying to move all the stuff from a barn, shop, garage, garden shed, and train building into a 26 X 30 shop has been challenging to say the least. In fact it can’t be done we have a 24 X 30 metal carport building on order and are adding 10 feet to the back of the shop for a train building.

The railroad will be going back up but will probably be a while yet before we get a good start on it. I will probably post a log on its progress on the site once we get started. You know that you and Chris are welcome to visit anytime, just let us know when.

Retirement is a whole new life style it seems to take some time to adjust to it. For instance it took me almost two days; my wife on the other hand seemed to accomplish it in about four hoursJ.

Thanks for bringing the thread on your railroads progress back to the top, I had been following along but have lost track of lots of things over the past few months.

Hope to see you soon and enjoy that retirement.

Rick

Dick,

Trust me, you aren’t the only one waiting. I’m trying to get out that way, but THEY keep pullin me back in. Haven’t figured out the THEY, yet. It might just be the little people in my head.

My grand plan has us coming that way. Other people’s plans are slightly different.
