Large Scale Central

Visiting CO & NM NG

My wife and I are going to be in CO and NM in mid May this year. The trip already includes a ride on the Durango & Silverton RR as a part of a travel seminar. We’re going to make a stop in Chama to see the Cumbres & Toltec RR at one end of the trip, not sure which. Does anyone have a hotel/B&B/motel recommendation for Chama. I’ve been doing a bit of looking and finding some eratic reviews.
Thanks,
Dave

The Branding Iron motel was the only one I found that was directly in Chama. It was comfy…

Dave,

Here is a link to the Chama Valley Chamber of Commerce: http://chamavalley.com/lodging.html

The Branding Iron Motel is a good reference… but you might also consider the Vista del Rio. There is usually snow in the high country and signs of spring in the valley that time fo year. Weather can be unpredictable that time year, so be prepared for quick changes.

Do you plan to visit other areas of Colorado?

Jerry

I’ve stayed at the Branding Iron the past few times I’ve been down there. It ain’t the Ritz Carlton, but it’s as good as any Motel 6 or such. There are a few B&Bs there, too. http://www.chama-nm.worldweb.com/WheretoStay/BedBreakfasts/ There may be others, that’s just what came up first on Google. I’ve not stayed at them, but I’ve not heard any complaints from friends who have over the years.

If you get up to Denver, let me know.

Eight or nine years ago we stayed at the “Gandy Dancer” B&B in Chama, very close to the depot. The place was nice and clean and the hosts were gracious. Price was equivalent to a stay at the Holiday Inn but the home cooked breakfast made the total price a bargain.

I stayed here http://www.chamatrailsinn.com/ when I was last in Chama.

Very friendly place with good food.

Dave,
If you REALLY want to experience Chama, stay at the Shamrock Hotel (800-982-8679). It’s directly across Terrace Avenue from the depot and the railyard.

We stayed at a B&B south out of Chama. Will never do that bed and breakfast routine, again. No TV in the rooms, wanted to serve breakfast around 0830 (some fofo crap) and didn’t know much about the trains. Follow the recommendations of others and stay by the railroad on main street.

Thanks guys. I’ve been looking at reviews, lodging websites and various other pages. Consistency in opinions and reviews is not really apparent so I’m trying to judge on the basis of most recent reviews. Kind of leaning towards the Parlor Car B&B. The website for the Gandy Dancer was not working yesterday so I’ll have to check again. The Branding Iron looks pretty good too. This is one that has those crazy mixed reviews.
Again thanks guys,
Dave

Don’t know anything about where to stay just wanted to say nice build in GR Dave
