Vintage Vette

Talk about yer storage locker wars, there’s a story in today’s (Friday’s) LA Times about this 1989 Corvette that was recently discovered in a storage facility near San Diego. Stolen off a new car lot in '89, it was driven to the locker by the perp, who stored it away and kept paying the rental fee until recently when he stopped and the locker owner threatened to forclose. The thief called his lawyer, who contacted the sheriff’s office, which did not charge the guy because he was cooperative (I’m guessing, the statute of limitations had long ago run out). The car was sold to a used car dealer, who sold it to a buddy/business partner, who hopes to make a killing on it at Barrett Jackson, or some other auction house. Now this is an exceptional car–67 miles on the odo, still smells new, although the tires were flat and there was a heavy coat of dust on it. But new or not, the concensus is that $40,000, which is what the new owner hopes to get at Barrett Jackson or some other auction house, is way optimistic for an '89, which sells for $8,600 to $9,700, according to Kelly Blue Book. The owner currently has the Vette for sale on eBay where the top bid as of this morning was $22 thou. By the way, until he tapped out, the thief spent $70,000 on rental fees. Talk about negative cash flow…

Now if that was a '63 split window I might rob a bank in order to buy it
