Video: How To Run The Ruby

As I’m sure most of you on this forum are already experienced Live Steam operators this video is not really made for you as an audience, but perhaps you have some friends interested in getting into the hobby and this may be of assistance to them.

This weekend we had some unseasonably nice weather in PA and my wife and I made the following How-To video on firing the Accucraft Ruby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KvMqRUOmME

We tried to keep on the subject of “what” to do and not get sidetracked with the related discussions about various “why.” The “why” subjects are all perhaps interesting topics on their own, but we felt that they tended to water down the key subject here of fundamental live steam operation. Plus, we set a goal of around 10 minutes for a single stand-alone video to teach the basics so it wouldn’t be too boring to the viewer yet still fit in all of the needed introductory info.

We purposely made no mention of Butane/Propane mixes, the various other brands of steam oil we have, why de-ionized water is bad, how to clean a blocked fuel jet, how to put things away, coupler types, throttle control, cylinder size, etc.

We’re not sure what Live Steam / How To we might work on next. Perhaps we’ll make a similar view on the operation of another loco in our stable. Perhaps we’ll explore one of the topics related to LS in greater detail. We figure we’ll listen to the feedback on this video for what the viewers are interested in seeing since it was comments to some of other videos that prompted us to start with this topic.

Really nice video, Charlie. Job well done.

Thanks, Tom!

Thank’s Tom. I’ve been running an LS 2 Cyl. Shay for three years and I learned a couple of things from your video. Well done!

Next you might do an after-run procedure video. My personal after run is to top-off butane, water and steam oil so next time all I need to do to run is fire the burner and oil around while waiting for the pressure to build.

I wasn’t sure if I walked in on an old conversation or what happened.

I think we should all thank Rooster.

Just chock full of little secrets, ain’t I?.. At the time I didn’t buy it to run it, just for nostalgia reasons, but it is a cute lil thang…

Charlie - an excellent video - hope William on the next post down is looking at it right now. @Ken - that’s the very first Ft Wilderness set I’ve ever seen, when do we see it running? Are you going to bring it to the invasion this year??

Ken thats a nice looking live steamer. I think it would look great running on my layout and maybe make a video. When is your next delivery up North along the I84?

Well, tac, ya missed it. I had it up at Fred’s about 4-5 years ago (2007 actually) and have the pix to prove it.

Maybe if your real good this year and can make it to Fred’s again, I’ll bring it along. I should run it more often, but I never bothered to get any of the paraphernalia needed to run it. I’ve since rectified that situation.
